VAR Finally Coming to the PSL 2025/26 Season, Confirms Minister McKenzie

The long-awaited introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is set to finally become a reality next season. This major development was confirmed by the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Gayton McKenzie. He revealed that all the groundwork has been completed. VAR will be rolled out in our domestic league.

VAR has consistently dominated conversations around controversial refereeing decisions in the Betway Premiership this season. The mounting frustration among clubs, fans, and analysts has highlighted the urgent need for technological support in officiating. It now seems that relief is on the way.

Government Has Delivered

In a video posted on his official X account, Minister McKenzie confirmed that the necessary funding—amounting to R90 million—has been made available. It has been handed over to the South African Football Association (SAFA). He emphasized that his department had fulfilled its responsibilities. The next steps are in SAFA’s hands.

“I promised that by April the money would be in place. The funds are there, and the tender process has already begun,” said McKenzie. “We even travelled to Spain to test the VAR system. With help from SuperSport, we saw that it functions perfectly.”

SAFA to Announce VAR Service Provider

The responsibility for completing the implementation now lies with SAFA. They will announce the company that has won the tender. This company will provide and operate the VAR system. FIFA prefers local football governing bodies to manage such projects. This preference keeps the management away from government departments.

McKenzie was firm in stating that his role in the matter is complete. “There’s nothing more I can do. The money is the most important part, and we’ve secured that. Let’s now give SAFA the opportunity to finalise the process.”

VAR to Modernise Local Football

The inclusion of VAR in the PSL is expected to bring the league in line with global standards. Most importantly, the system will reduce the number of controversial calls during matches. With SuperSport’s technical support and the government’s financial backing, all indications suggest VAR will be operational when the new season kicks off.

While an exact launch date has not been announced, the assurance from the minister and visible progress suggests South African football fans can expect to see VAR in action next season.

The implementation of VAR marks a significant step forward in professionalizing and modernizing the sport in the country. For many supporters who have grown weary of costly refereeing errors, this news will be welcomed as a turning point for football in the nation.
