Tembisa Hospital Arson: Insider Suspect Confesses

A man has confessed to masterminding the fire that tore through two units at Tembisa Hospital three weeks ago. During police questioning, he not only admitted to starting the blaze but also named several accomplices—including a hospital security guard—who allegedly helped carry out the attack.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed the breakthrough on Monday, describing the confession as a turning point in the investigation. The suspect now faces formal charges of arson, and the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court has scheduled his bail hearing for next week.

Tembisa Hospital Fire: From Informant to Main Suspect

Police originally picked up the man after he offered a tip-off about the hospital fire. However, investigators quickly realized the so-called informant wasn’t a witness—he was the one behind the crime.

“The self-confessed informant over the arson on Tembisa Hospital was picked up by the Multi-Disciplinary Team for questioning on information that he had given to the Police,” said Premier Lesufi. “It became apparent that the informant was the suspect, and he ended up admitting that he was involved in the burning of the hospital.”

Confession Details the Planning and Execution

Investigators obtained a detailed confession from the suspect, referred to in court documents as “Mr X” for legal reasons. He described how he planned the attack, acquired petrol, coordinated with others, and executed the operation.

Lesufi confirmed that the suspect provided a step-by-step breakdown of the plot. “He gave details regarding planning, payment, purchase of petrol used, preparation and execution of the act,” Lesufi stated.

Accomplices Played Key Roles in Coordinated Attack At Tembisa Hospital

According to the suspect, the fire was not the work of a lone individual. He named several accomplices, including a person known as “Mr YY,” who allegedly assisted from inside the hospital grounds.

“The suspect indicated that entry was gained through the fence,” said Lesufi. “He explained his role and the roles of other participants whom he identified as accomplices.”

Authorities believe the group carefully planned the attack, raising serious concerns about insider involvement. The alleged participation of a security guard further compromises the hospital’s trust and safety protocols.

Investigators Expect More Arrests

Lesufi emphasized that the investigation is far from over. Authorities are following leads based on the suspect’s confession and anticipate more arrests as they continue to piece together the full network of individuals involved.

“This is a work in progress,” Lesufi noted. Police are currently verifying the roles of the named accomplices and examining whether others at the facility knowingly enabled the attack.

No Motive Released Yet

Authorities have not yet revealed a clear motive behind the attack. Investigators are focusing on establishing why the suspects targeted the hospital and whether the act was linked to internal disputes, political motives, or criminal intent.

In the meantime, the suspect remains in custody and faces serious charges of arson. As the legal process unfolds, the Tembisa community watches closely, demanding accountability and answers.
