Former Bafana Striker to Leave Orlando Pirates Amid Transfer Links

Zakhele Lepasa appears to be on the verge of leaving Orlando Pirates as the season concludes. This follows a frustrating campaign in which he did not feature in any competitive matches. At 28, the striker has endured a challenging period. He finds himself completely sidelined from first-team action. He missed out on opportunities in the Betway Premiership, all domestic cup fixtures, and the Buccaneers’ CAF Champions League campaign.
A Career Stagnating
Once considered a key attacking option, Lepasa’s decline has been steep. During the 2022/23 season, he was loaned out to SuperSport United where he displayed flashes of his former ability. However, persistent injury issues coupled with increased competition for places upon his return to Mayfair have seen him, at Orlando Pirates, slip further down the pecking order.
Under the leadership of former coach José Riveiro, the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa were given the nod in attack. This effectively pushed Lepasa out of the picture. With no game time and his form affected by lack of rhythm, his role within the club has diminished significantly.
Missed Opportunities and Transfer Talks
Lepasa was previously linked with potential moves to both SuperSport United and Polokwane City during the most recent transfer window. However, despite interest from those clubs, no formal agreement was reached. Discussions to transfer Lepasa away from Orlando Pirates now seem likely to be revisited as the player looks to reignite his career elsewhere.
Reports close to the club suggest that Pirates are preparing to trim their squad during the off-season. Lepasa is understood to be among those set to be released from Orlando Pirates. The forward is believed to be included in a group of players. This reportedly also includes Miguel Timm, who will be offloaded to make way for fresh arrivals.
Time for a Fresh Start
While the exact length of Lepasa’s remaining contract remains unclear, sources indicate that his exit from Orlando Stadium is all but confirmed. For the striker, a move away from the Buccaneers could represent a vital opportunity. It would allow him to reboot his career and rediscover the form that once made him a regular in the national team setup.
Given his previous stint at SuperSport United, it would not be surprising to see the Pretoria-based side revisit their interest. Polokwane City may also return to the table. This is especially likely if they aim to bolster their attacking options ahead of the next campaign.
Change on the Horizon for Orlando Pirates
As Pirates gear up for a squad reshuffle in preparation for a fresh season, Lepasa’s impending departure highlights the evolving nature of the team under new plans. The club’s technical team is clearly looking to refresh the squad. Unfortunately for Lepasa, leaving Orlando Pirates seems inevitable as he no longer fits into that vision.
With the transfer window approaching, all eyes will be on where the former Bafana Bafana striker lands next. It remains to be seen whether he can seize the second chance to revive a career that once showed immense promise.
