SASSA Extends SASSA Gold Card Validity to 31 May 2025

SASSA Gold Card Deadline Extended to 31 May: What You Need to Know
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), in partnership with Postbank, has officially extended the validity of the SASSA Gold Cards until 31 May 2025. This decision, announced by Postbank on 28 March, comes after weeks of public confusion and mounting pressure due to inconsistent messaging and widespread challenges faced by social grant beneficiaries during the ongoing card replacement process.

Why the Switch From The SASSA Gold Card?
The SASSA Gold Card, which millions of grant beneficiaries have relied on for years, was originally set to expire at the end of December 2024. However, Postbank and SASSA announced plans for all Gold Card users to migrate to the new Postbank Black Card, which boasts enhanced security features that comply with updated banking standards. The goal of this transition is to modernize the grant payment system and protect beneficiaries against fraud and card-based vulnerabilities.
Initially, beneficiaries were told that their Gold Cards would no longer work after 20 March 2025. But logistical issues, system failures, and limited access to card replacement sites made it impossible for many to switch in time. By the deadline, only 1.3 million of the 2.9 million affected beneficiaries had managed to replace their cards.
A Timeline of The Transition
- November 2024: Postbank announces the expiry of the Gold Card and the need to upgrade to Black Cards.
- February 2025: The first deadline is set for 28 February, then moved to 20 March due to slow progress.
- 18 March 2025: Postbank announces it is issuing over 30,000 cards per day but still falls short.
- 20 March 2025: The deadline passes with millions still holding Gold Cards.
- 28 March 2025: Postbank extends the deadline to 31 May 2025 after public backlash and parliamentary scrutiny.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, stated on 27 March that the new deadline was 30 April. The very next day, SASSA released a statement suggesting that Gold Cards would remain valid until all cards were replaced. Postbank quickly corrected this, confirming that the cards will only remain valid until 31 May 2025, not indefinitely.
Postbank CEO Nikki Mbangashe apologized during a media briefing for the contradictory statements and reassured the public that Gold Cards would continue to work until the end of May. She urged beneficiaries to act soon to avoid last-minute rushes.
“People have the whole of April and May. The card will continue working up until the last day of May,” she said.
What Beneficiaries Need to Do
SASSA’s acting CEO, Themba Matlou, welcomed the extension but cautioned beneficiaries against delaying.
“We humbly plea to our beneficiaries to use this opportunity and not wait for the last hour… This should not make you relax; this should make you to wake up tomorrow, with less pressure, and change your card,” Matlou advised.
To switch from a Gold Card to a Postbank Black Card, beneficiaries must:
- Bring their green ID book, smart ID card, or temporary ID.
- Visit the nearest Postbank card replacement site (over 300 are available nationwide).
- Avoid Post Offices unless you are an asylum seeker, Mzansi Flexi Card user, or have lost your card.
- Use the USSD code *120*355# to find your nearest site.
Selected retailers like Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar are assisting with the process to ease congestion and improve accessibility.
The Cost of the Switch From The SASSA Gold Card
The card replacement operation has already cost the government over R200 million, yet implementation challenges remain. Many beneficiaries have had to travel long distances, endure hours in queues, and deal with frequent system breakdowns. Some have opted to open accounts with private banks rather than endure the stress of switching to a Black Card.
Despite these hurdles, Postbank insists that the Black Card rollout is necessary for improved security and long-term efficiency in grant disbursement.
While the extension of the Gold Card deadline to 31 May 2025 provides temporary relief, beneficiaries are strongly encouraged not to delay the switch to the new Black Card. Acting swiftly will help avoid future complications and ensure uninterrupted access to social grants.
