Orlando Pirates Promise Stronger Comeback After Magesi 1-1 Draw

Orlando Pirates interim coach Mandla Ncikazi has promised a stronger and more determined Buccaneers outfit next season. This comes following their 1-1 draw with Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening. The result brought down the curtain on a Betway Premiership campaign that ended in a rather subdued fashion for the Soweto giants.

A Flat Ending to a Dramatic Season

While the 2023/24 league title had already been decided in Mamelodi Sundowns’ favor nearly two weeks earlier, Pirates were still required to honor their final fixture. This match was played days after what was dubbed the league’s final weekend. The fixture lacked the intensity of a title decider, yet the Orlando Pirates had the chance to end their campaign on a high note.

They looked set to do so when Patrick Maswanganyi found the net just seven minutes into the match. However, their early lead was short-lived as Edmore Chirambadare levelled matters for Magesi shortly after the half-hour mark. Despite several attempts, neither side could break the deadlock in the second half.

Ncikazi Stays Optimistic About Next Season

Speaking after the game, Ncikazi struck a hopeful tone about what lies ahead for the Sea Robbers. He emphasized Orlando Pirates’ potential moving forward.

“There’s no doubt that Pirates will be a much-improved side next season,” he assured. “I have full confidence in the leadership within the club. There’s wisdom in our system, and that gives me great hope for the future.”

Ncikazi assumed the role of interim coach after José Riveiro was released from his duties earlier than expected. Riveiro’s final match in charge was the comprehensive 3-0 win over Golden Arrows on May 13. Since then, under Ncikazi’s guidance, Pirates have managed three draws and one defeat—results that reflect both transition and uncertainty.

Analysing the Campaign to Build Ahead

With the season now complete, Ncikazi believes the technical team must evaluate their performance. They also need to make informed adjustments, all while considering the expectations at Orlando Pirates.

“It’s time for us to reflect—where did we fall short, what worked, and what needs fixing. That analysis will guide our decisions and ensure that we return stronger. The tools are there; now it’s about applying them correctly,” he said.

Although Ncikazi is unlikely to continue as the main man in charge next season, reports indicate a return to an assistant role. His commitment to the club’s long-term growth remains unwavering. This is particularly important at Orlando Pirates.

He acknowledged that catching a dominant Sundowns, who have now clinched eight successive league titles, will require collective effort. Moreover, it will require a long-term vision for Orlando Pirates.

“I see myself as a small piece in a much larger project. Coaching at Pirates isn’t about personal accolades—it’s about fulfilling a purpose, particularly within Orlando Pirates. When you’re part of this club, you’re entrusted with a mission,” Ncikazi explained.

His reflective tone and emphasis on unity suggest a leadership philosophy grounded in humility and service. This could be key as the club plots a way forward, especially for the Orlando Pirates.

All Eyes on Offseason Decisions

With Pirates now shifting their focus to the off-season, attention will turn to recruitment, technical staff decisions, and preseason planning. The club has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the campaign, but inconsistency has prevented them from truly challenging Sundowns’ supremacy.
