Orlando Pirates Eye Rulani Mokwena as Potential Replacement for Riveiro

Orlando Pirates are believed to be strongly considering Rulani Mokwena as the next head coach to take the reins at Mayfair once José Riveiro departs. According to Phakaaathi, the Buccaneers have identified Mokwena as their preferred candidate to succeed the Spaniard. He will step down at the end of the season after a fruitful three-year spell with the club.
Riveiro, who guided Pirates to multiple domestic cup triumphs, is currently focused on finishing his tenure on a high note. The Nedbank Cup final against rivals Kaizer Chiefs is firmly in his sights.

Speculation Surrounds the Next Appointment
The announcement of Riveiro’s exit has naturally sparked intense speculation regarding his replacement. While the initial frontrunner was seasoned tactician Pitso Mosimane, recent developments suggest that the club’s focus has now shifted.
Sources close to the club indicate that Mosimane was indeed a serious contender discussed at management level. However, once Wydad Casablanca confirmed that they would part ways with Mokwena at the end of the season, Pirates’ leadership recalibrated their approach.
Rulani Mokwena Emerges as Frontrunner
“Yes, it’s true that Pitso’s name came up in the meetings and was considered the top choice,” said an insider. “But everything changed when Wydad announced Rulani would be leaving. He’s now the main target.”
Rulani Mokwena, who previously co-coached Mamelodi Sundowns and held various technical roles at Pirates, has had a challenging time in Morocco. His spell at Wydad has been tough, with the team underperforming and sitting third in the league. They are 16 points behind RS Berkane.
The prospect of a homecoming for Mokwena could appeal to Pirates. They look to build on the foundation laid by Riveiro.
Administrative Changes on the Cards
In a separate but equally significant development, former club administrator Floyd Mbele could also be heading back to Pirates. Mbele, who left the Soweto giants in 2023, has recently parted ways with Sekhukhune United.
Reports suggest that the club has struggled administratively following the passing of Screamer Tshabalala. Mpumi Khoza is reportedly overwhelmed in his solo efforts to manage operations. As a result, he has recommended bringing Mbele back to stabilize the club’s off-field matters.
A New Era for the Buccaneers
With both technical and administrative changes looming, the Buccaneers may be preparing for a substantial revamp ahead of the 2025/26 season. The potential return of familiar faces like Mokwena and Mbele could signal a desire to blend continuity with renewed ambition.
As fans eagerly await official confirmation, one thing is certain — big changes are on the horizon at Orlando Pirates.
