In 2025, Gauteng’s healthcare system is undergoing significant change, with a combination of infrastructure upgrades and advanced technologies aimed at enhancing patient care, improving efficiency, and supporting healthcare workers. With the backing of the provincial government and substantial investments, Gauteng is setting new standards for public healthcare in South Africa.

Expanding Healthcare Infrastructure with Four New Hospitals

In response to the growing demand for healthcare services, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is focused on expanding its hospital network. The province is on track to open four new hospitals in Daveyton, Orange Farm, Soshanguve, and Diepsloot. These hospitals will be strategically located in township areas, aiming to bridge regional disparities and provide residents with improved access to quality healthcare services.

Construction of the Daveyton hospital is progressing with funding secured and technical plans expected to be finalised by March 2025. The Orange Farm hospital’s site assessment is nearing completion, and plans for Soshanguve and Diepsloot are moving forward with land confirmations expected by the end of the current financial year.

    Major Refurbishments at Existing Hospitals

Alongside new construction, Gauteng’s existing healthcare facilities are also being revitalised. Helen Joseph Hospital, for example, is undergoing comprehensive renovations, including improvements to wards, clinics, emergency departments, and breast care facilities. These upgrades aim to create a safer, cleaner environment, reduce hospital-acquired infections, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

At Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, the integration of high-tech equipment marks a significant step towards modernising healthcare. In April 2025, the hospital introduced state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanners, a catheterisation lab, and new ICU beds in its trauma unit. Along with these upgrades, refurbishments to wards and enhanced antenatal and mental health services ensure a more patient-centred approach.

    Adoption of Advanced Medical Technology

Gauteng’s healthcare revolution is not just about brick-and-mortar upgrades; it also heavily incorporates cutting-edge medical technology. New diagnostic tools such as digital X-rays, MRI machines, and CT scans improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce patient waiting times, and facilitate quicker, life-saving interventions.

A key focus has been the roll-out of Electronic Health Records (EHR), which streamline patient information management and enable better communication across departments. By moving away from paper-based records, the GDoH is improving data accessibility and making healthcare more efficient. This digital shift also supports decision-making, helping healthcare professionals provide more timely and effective care.

    Enhancing Infection Control and Sustainability

The GDoH is also prioritising patient and staff safety through improved infection control systems. New ventilation systems, touchless technologies, and sanitising stations have been implemented across hospitals to safeguard against infections. These measures are especially critical in protecting vulnerable patients and healthcare workers.

The department demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by integrating energy-efficient fixtures and water-saving technologies into healthcare facilities. These upgrades align with national goals for greener public infrastructure and help reduce long-term operational costs.

    Training Frontline Healthcare Workers

Technology alone cannot transform healthcare without proper training for healthcare professionals. The GDoH invests heavily in continuous education and skill development for staff to ensure that they are proficient in using new technologies and adhering to best clinical practices. This investment in human resources complements the technological upgrades and enhances service delivery across the province.

    Emergency and Critical Care Upgrades

In emergency departments and intensive care units (ICUs) across Gauteng, the focus is on improving equipment and workflows. Upgraded triage systems and better ambulance coordination are significantly improving emergency response times, resulting in faster treatment and better patient outcomes. These updates are crucial for handling the province’s growing population and increasing healthcare demands.

A Patient-Centred Approach in Facility Design

Modernising Gauteng’s health facilities involves more than just upgrading technology and infrastructure… It also focuses on creating patient-friendly environments. Renovation projects prioritise features such as clear signage, family waiting areas, private consultation spaces, and accessible facilities to enhance comfort and reduce stress for patients during their visits.

    Sustained Growth and Innovation

Looking ahead, Gauteng is committed to sustaining the momentum of its healthcare transformation. Plans include expanding telemedicine services, incorporating AI-driven diagnostics, and extending community outreach programs. These innovations aim to further strengthen the resilience and inclusiveness of the province’s healthcare system.

Government Commitment and Public Health Impact

Premier Panyaza Lesufi underscored the importance of these projects in his 2025 State of the Province Address, stating, “Our people deserve hospitals that inspire confidence, offer dignity, and deliver world-class care.” With billions invested in both infrastructure and technology, the Gauteng Department of Health is on track to deliver on this vision, ensuring that the province’s health system meets the needs of its nearly 16 million residents.

By focusing on infrastructure upgrades, technological innovation, and patient-centred care, Gauteng’s healthcare system is evolving to meet the challenges of the future. This comprehensive transformation promises to improve health outcomes, reduce disparities, and enhance the overall patient experience for years to come.
