Details of the Skit and Public Reaction

In the sketch, Mpho Popps impersonates actor Israel Matseke-Zulu’s speech from the memorial. This is followed by fellow comedian Tsitsi mimicking actor Warren Masemola. The skit also features actress Farieda Metsileng, Warren and other well-known personalities. The video’s background includes photos of the late Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away in May 2025.

While some viewers found the skit humorous, many criticised it as disrespectful and inappropriate. This was especially given the recent nature of Chweneyagae’s passing. Social media users expressed outrage, calling the timing “too soon.” They accused Popps of exploiting the late actor’s death for comedy. Comments ranged from disappointment to outright condemnation, with some urging the comedian to show more sensitivity.

Mpho Popps Responds to the Backlash

Addressing the controversy in an interview on The Way Up with Nia Brown and Okay Wasabi on YFM, Mpho Popps clarified the intent behind the skit. He explained that the comedy was not aimed at mocking Presley Chweneyagae himself but rather Warren Masemola’s speech at the memorial. Popps highlighted that Masemola was part of the sketch. He stated that the humour was meant to be meta.

Popps also emphasised the close relationships between the late actor and those involved in the skit. He stated that Presley was known for his sense of humour and that he believed the actor would have appreciated the tribute if he were alive. According to Popps, the sketch was intended as a form of honouring Presley in a way that reflected his personality.

The Debate on Comedy and Respect

The incident has reignited discussions about the boundaries of comedy, especially when it involves sensitive topics such as death and memorials. Supporters of Popps argue that comedians often use satire to process grief. They believed the sketch was a form of tribute rather than disrespect.

Conversely, critics maintain that certain subjects require careful handling. They argue that comedy should not cross lines that cause pain to grieving families and fans. The timing of the skit, so soon after Chweneyagae’s death, was a particular point of contention.

Mpho Popps’ comedy skit referencing Presley Chweneyagae’s memorial has generated mixed reactions, highlighting the delicate balance between humour and respect. While Popps defends his work as a heartfelt tribute, public sensitivity remains high.
