George Matlou Yet to Discuss Future with Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has revealed that he has not held any discussions about his future at the club. His current contract is set to expire at the end of June. Despite being just weeks away from the end of the 2024/25 season, George Matlou insists no conversations have taken place regarding a possible extension with Amakhosi.
Uncertain Future at Naturena
As the season draws to a close, Matlou’s situation remains unresolved. George Matlou, the talented midfielder who joined Chiefs in 2022, has had a challenging time with injuries, particularly over the past year. After recovering from a lengthy layoff, he only returned to action in the New Year. Since then, he has managed just three starts across all competitions under head coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Matlou has, however, been utilised from the bench, making 12 substitute appearances. He played a key role in the Nedbank Cup final victory over rivals Orlando Pirates — a win that ended a ten-year trophy drought for the club.
Focus on the Present, Not the Contract
Speaking this week, Matlou admitted that he has not even engaged his agent regarding his future. “I’m not someone who talks to my agent during the season,” he said. “I want to stay focused on the team I’m playing for. Thinking about contracts during the campaign could take my focus away from my performance.”
He also made it clear that his attention is on finishing the season strong. “My only focus right now is helping the team secure a top-eight finish this weekend,” George Matlou added, ahead of Chiefs’ final clash of the season against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium.
Hopes of Giving More to Amakhosi
Despite the uncertainty, Matlou expressed his desire to win more silverware with the Soweto giants. The Nedbank Cup triumph was a significant milestone for both the club and the player. George Matlou is eager to build on that success.
“It meant a lot to me — lifting a trophy with a club as massive as Chiefs is something special,” he said. “There was so much talk about the ten-year wait. But now, I am proud to be one of the players who helped make history by ending that run.”
Gratitude and Faith
Matlou, who has been open about his faith, says he’s leaving his future in the hands of God and the club’s leadership. “I grew up in church. I believe in leaving things to God, the technical team, and the board. Football is unpredictable, so I’m not making any long-term plans.”
As the season finale approaches, the club continues to scramble for a top-eight finish in the Betway Premiership. George Matlou is determined to give his all — whether or not he remains with the team beyond June.
