Kaizer Chiefs Eye Return of Former Star Axed Two Years Ago

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly plotting a surprise reunion with a former academy graduate they let go just two years ago. The Naturena outfit, who are in the midst of another squad overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, are monitoring the progress of midfielder Lebohang Lesako. He is now a standout performer at Casric Stars.

Revival in the Motsepe Foundation Championship

Lesako, now 25, has reignited his career in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He has become a key figure for Casric Stars and has earned plaudits for his consistency and maturity on the pitch. Chiefs scouts have been following his performances closely. Internal discussions are reportedly underway about a possible return.

A Kaizer Chiefs insider, speaking to Soccer Laduma, revealed that the club is impressed with Lesako’s development both technically and mentally. “They know him well from his time in the academy. The feedback is that he’s grown as a player and as a person, and that has caught the eye of the technical team,” the source explained.

A Second Chance at Naturena?

Lesako originally broke into the Chiefs first team in 2019 after rising through the club’s youth system. However, with game time at a premium, he was loaned out to Uthongathi and later to Swallows FC. He struggled to cement a spot in the Amakhosi senior squad and was eventually released in 2023.

Following his permanent move to Casric Stars, Lesako found the stability and minutes he needed to flourish. He featured prominently throughout the recent season and played a crucial role in helping his side reach the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs.

This strong form has seemingly reopened the door at Naturena. The management appears to be revisiting past decisions as part of their rebuilding strategy under new leadership.

Timing Could Be Key

While Chiefs are clearly interested in bringing Lesako back into the fold, any potential transfer is likely to be postponed until after Casric Stars’ playoff campaign concludes. The club is understood to be respectful of Casric’s current competitive commitments. They are not expected to initiate formal talks until the postseason.

“They’re giving Casric space to focus on the playoffs,” the insider added. “But the interest is genuine. Lesako is firmly on their radar.”

Reinforcements Coming

The news comes as Amakhosi prepare to welcome a wave of fresh talent ahead of their European pre-season tour with newly appointed head coach Nasreddine Nabi. Several senior players have been offloaded, signalling the start of yet another squad revamp. Lesako’s potential return could offer a feel-good story of redemption and second chances. This is especially true for supporters who value homegrown talent.

His return would mark a dramatic turnaround for a player once deemed surplus to requirements. He is now seemingly poised for another opportunity to prove himself in the top flight.

From Fringe Player to Midfield Contender?

Should the deal materialise, Lesako’s task will be clear—translate his Championship form into consistent performances at PSL level. Chiefs are desperate for players with hunger, discipline, and a point to prove, and Lesako’s journey ticks all those boxes.

For the player, a return to the club that once released him would be a chance to rewrite his legacy in the country’s top division.

While official comment from the club remains elusive, this development has sparked considerable buzz in local football circles. Many fans are eager to see whether Lesako can complete what would be a remarkable homecoming story.
