Key Dates and Affected Areas

  • Tuesday, 24 June 2025 (06:00 – 20:00):
Cosmo City residents will experience a 14-hour water outage while Rand Water replaces bulk magnetic flow meters at the local reservoir. Residents are urged to store sufficient water in advance.
  • Wednesday, 25 June 2025 (08:00 – 18:00):
Newlands, Albertville, Montgomery Park, and Albertskroon (Region B) will face a 14-hour outage. Crews will install pressure-reducing valves to stabilise water supply during this period.

Other affected areas during this phase include Forest Hill, Whiteridge North, and parts of Orange Farm. The maintenance programme extends into July, with additional meter replacements and infrastructure upgrades planned.

Purpose of the Maintenance

The meter replacement programme involves installing new magnetic flow meters and mechanical meters at various reservoirs. These devices are essential for accurately monitoring water flow and usage, enabling better management of Johannesburg’s ageing water infrastructure.

Additionally, pressure-reducing valves are being installed to stabilise supply and reduce pipe bursts caused by fluctuating water pressure.

Impact on Residents and Businesses

During the 14-hour outages, affected households and businesses will experience no water supply. Johannesburg Water advises residents to store enough water beforehand to meet daily needs. The outages may disrupt normal routines, so planning ahead is essential.

Residents in high-lying areas or those reliant on direct pumping systems should be particularly cautious, as water pressure may be low even outside scheduled outages.

Longer-Term Maintenance and Water Supply Challenges

Beyond these 14-hour outages, Johannesburg faces a more extensive 21-day maintenance period starting 30 June 2025. This will affect multiple areas including Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, and various reservoir systems. During this time, water pumping will be reduced in phases, causing intermittent supply and pressure drops.

Rand Water has emphasised that these maintenance activities are strategically scheduled during the cooler months to minimise disruption during peak demand periods expected from August onwards.
