Why Ford Is Recalling the 2024 Ranger in Southern Africa

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has announced a recall affecting certain 2024 Ford Ranger models due to a critical safety defect. Approximately 25 vehicles sold in South Africa and Botswana are impacted by this recall. It also extends to neighbouring countries such as Namibia and Swaziland.

The Defect: Faulty Front Lower Control Arm

The recall concerns the front lower control arm (FLCA), a vital suspension component responsible for maintaining wheel alignment and vehicle stability. In the affected Rangers, the FLCA may have been incorrectly fitted on the left-hand side of the vehicle instead of the correct part. This manufacturing error poses a serious safety risk.

According to the National Consumer Commission (NCC), the improper fitting of the FLCA can lead to the separation of the joint. This separation may cause loss of control of the affected wheel, severely impairing vehicle handling. Such a failure significantly increases the risk of a crash or injury to the driver, passengers, and other road users.

Scope and Origin of the Recall

The affected Rangers were manufactured between 29 October and 7 November 2024 at Ford’s Silverton factory in Pretoria. The vehicles were distributed nationally and exported to neighbouring Southern African countries.

Ford South Africa has urged owners of the affected vehicles to contact their nearest authorised dealership immediately to schedule a free repair appointment. The dealerships will inspect and replace the faulty control arm at no cost to the vehicle owner.

This recall is part of a wider wave of vehicle recalls in South Africa in 2025. Alongside Ford, several other brands including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, and Volkswagen have issued recalls due to various safety-related defects. The NCC continues to monitor these developments closely to protect consumer safety.

The Recall

The Ford Ranger recall highlights the critical importance of quality control in vehicle manufacturing. The swift response needed when safety issues arise is crucial. Owners of the 2024 Ranger models affected by the front lower control arm defect should act promptly to have their vehicles inspected and repaired. This recall ensures that safety remains paramount and helps prevent potential accidents caused by this mechanical fault.
