Ex-Orlando Pirates Boss Jose Riveiro Pledges Loyalty to Club

Former Orlando Pirates coach José Riveiro has declared his unwavering loyalty to the Soweto giants. He insists he would never take the reins at another Betway Premiership club should he ever return to South Africa.

Riveiro officially parted ways with the Buccaneers on Tuesday evening. This came just hours after leading his side to a dominant 3-0 win over Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium. It was a fitting farewell for the Orlando Pirates coach. Goals from Tshegofatso Mabasa, Bandile Shandu and Kabelo Dlamini secured an emphatic send-off for the Spaniard.

“Only Pirates” – Riveiro’s Loyalty Statement

During his final post-match press conference, Riveiro was clear about his stance on coaching in the country again: “No, never,” he said firmly when asked about the possibility of joining another PSL club.

“Once a Buccaneer, always a Buccaneer. Orlando Pirates is the only club I could ever coach in this country. It’s the only team that gives me the motivation, the courage, and the heart needed to lead.”

His heartfelt words struck a chord with the Pirates faithful. Many of them were seen holding up emotional farewell banners in the stands. One message highlighted his dedication, with Orlando Pirates legend written in Spanish, read: “Muchas Gracias Padre José Riveiro Por Siempre Una Leyenda”, meaning “Many thanks Father José Riveiro, forever a legend.”

A Successful Three-Year Tenure

Riveiro leaves Orlando Pirates with an impressive legacy, having guided Pirates to five cup titles during his three-year tenure. His time in charge was marked by discipline, tactical precision, and a deep respect for the badge. These qualities endeared him to both players and supporters alike.

Set to Join Al Ahly?

Though he remained tight-lipped about his next destination, Riveiro is widely expected to be unveiled as the new head coach of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, following his Orlando Pirates stay. It is rumoured he’s replacing Marcel Koller. “I can’t say much now due to confidentiality,” he explained. “But the announcement will come soon. I hope people will understand and wish me well.”

No Regrets as He Bids Farewell

Despite leaving on a high note, Riveiro has no regrets about walking away.

“I have no regrets at all. I gave everything I had—heart, effort, and time. I made mistakes, like everyone, but I always acted in the best interest of the team. I always put my players and the club first,” he reflected.

As the curtain falls on a memorable chapter, Riveiro departs with his legacy firmly cemented at Mayfair. For Pirates fans, he will always be more than just a coach—he is, and will remain, a Buccaneer at heart, forever linked to the Orlando Pirates name.
