Overview of the Cold Front Impact

The cold front is currently affecting the southern parts of the country, causing cloudy skies, light rain, and showers along the coastal regions. This system will bring cold to cool weather across most provinces. Moreover, the Western and Northern Cape provinces are expected to experience the most intense conditions later this week, from Wednesday to Friday (25–27 June). During this period, very cold, wet, and windy weather is forecast. This includes heavy rainfall, strong interior winds, gale-force coastal winds, rough seas, and light snowfall on high ground.

Provincial Weather Warnings and Updates

Western Cape and Northern Cape

The Western Cape is experiencing partly cloudy, cold to cool weather today, with light rain and showers particularly over the south-western areas. Winds along the coast are moderate to fresh, coming from the north-west to westerly directions. The Northern Cape has morning fog in central parts but remains fine and cold to cool overall. Coastal winds will shift from light and variable to moderate south to south-easterly in the afternoon.

From Wednesday to Friday, an intense cold front will bring hazardous conditions including heavy rain, strong winds, and very rough seas. SAWS has issued yellow level 2 warnings for damaging waves between Plettenberg Bay and East London, which could disrupt navigation and port activities. Additionally, yellow level 1 warnings for damaging winds are in place between Plettenberg Bay and Port Alfred. These could pose risks to small vessels.

Eastern Cape

The western half of the Eastern Cape will see morning fog patches in southern areas, followed by fine and cool weather. Winds along the coast will be fresh to strong westerly. The eastern half will also experience morning fog in places, with light to moderate westerly winds. No severe weather warnings are currently active. Still, residents should remain cautious of foggy conditions reducing visibility.

Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West

Gauteng will have fine and cool conditions throughout the day, with a high UVB sunburn index, so sun protection remains important despite the cold. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will experience fine and cold to cool weather, though the Lowveld areas will be warmer. North West province will be fine and cool.

Free State and KwaZulu-Natal

The Free State will have fine, cold to cool weather. KwaZulu-Natal will see fine and cool to warm conditions, becoming partly cloudy in the east from the afternoon. Coastal winds will shift from moderate northerly to southerly by evening. The UVB sunburn index is very high in KwaZulu-Natal, so sun safety is advised despite cooler temperatures.
