City Power Schedules 8‑Hour Daily Outages Across Johannesburg This Week

Residents of Johannesburg should brace for a week of widespread, scheduled power outages. Starting Tuesday, City Power will implement 8-hour power cuts across multiple suburbs, affecting thousands of homes and businesses. These outages, planned from 10 to 15 June 2025, are part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance to stabilize the city’s electricity grid.
Unlike Eskom’s load shedding, these power cuts are not random or reactive. City Power has published detailed daily schedules, and they have confirmed that these outages are critical for upgrading substations and improving long-term power reliability.

Which areas will power outages affect?
The power outages will roll out by region. On Tuesday, 10 June, Region F and Region G will experience the first round of cuts. In Region F, areas like Wanderers Street, Hospital ‘N’, and Sutherland Street will go dark from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Region G, including Finetown, Grassmere Tollgate, and parts of Lenasia South, will lose power between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On June 11, power outages will affect parts of Region A. Residents of Noordwyk EXT 43 and surrounding streets like Alwyn and Westbrook should expect no power from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The maintenance will continue through the week and wrap up with more cuts on Sunday, 15 June, targeting areas supplied by the Ethor Johnson Switching Station.
You can find the full list of affected areas in the official schedules provided by City Power.
Why Is City Power Doing This?
City Power says these planned power outages are necessary to carry out vital upgrades on the electricity infrastructure. Substations are being repaired, and switching systems are being modernized. By completing this work, the utility hopes to reduce unplanned outages and improve reliability especially during winter, when the grid is under pressure from higher usage.
While residents may experience inconvenience now, the intention is to avoid longer and more unpredictable power failures in the future.
How Should You Prepare for Power Outages?
Power outages of this length can affect your daily routine, especially if you’re working from home or running a business. Here are a few practical tips to stay ahead:
- Charge all devices and backup batteries the night before.
- Keep flashlights, candles, and power banks accessible.
- Avoid opening fridges or freezers during outages to preserve food.
- Use surge protectors to protect electronics when power is restored.
- Stay connected: Follow @CityPowerJhb on X (Twitter) for updates.
Remember, even when power is off, City Power urges residents to treat all power lines and plugs as live, as electricity may return unexpectedly if work finishes early.
Winter Pressure Adds to the Challenge
This week’s outages also come as Eskom continues to implement load reduction measures in high-demand areas. While these are separate from City Power’s scheduled maintenance, they could overlap meaning some residents might experience multiple disruptions in a single day. Gauteng.net has reported similar concerns from affected communities.
Stay Informed, Stay Prepared
This isn’t just a Johannesburg inconvenience it’s a city-wide test of resilience. These scheduled 8-hour outages may be temporary, but their effects ripple through every part of life: home, school, work, and business.
City Power has committed to finishing work on time, or even earlier where possible. But until then, planning ahead is essential.
