Tshwane Residents Brace for 32-Hour Water Outage from Wednesday for Pipeline Repairs

Parts of Tshwane will experience a 32-hour water shutdown starting Wednesday, 25 June 2025, as the City conducts urgent pipeline repairs. The maintenance work will leave several areas with low pressure or no water supply until Thursday afternoon. Residents are urged to prepare by storing water and limiting consumption during this period to minimize disruption.

Water Shutdown Schedule and Affected Areas

The City of Tshwane will shut down water supply starting at 6:00 AM on Wednesday and restore it by 2:00 PM on Thursday. This 32-hour outage will affect neighborhoods such as Eersterust, Villieria, Wonderboom, and parts of Pretoria North. These areas depend on pipelines that urgently need repairs to prevent future leaks and infrastructure failures.

Pipeline Repairs and Risks of Delay

The maintenance team will focus on deteriorating sections of the 75 uPVC pipeline connecting Masopha and Hlakola streets. If the City delays these repairs, it risks more severe leaks and longer outages. Therefore, this proactive intervention aims to enhance long-term water supply reliability while addressing the immediate weaknesses of the aging infrastructure.

Measures to Reduce Impact on Residents

To minimize disruption, the City has pre-filled reservoirs to 80% capacity before the shutdown. Furthermore, roaming water tankers will serve affected neighborhoods, and emergency water collection points will be available for residents. Technicians will work continuously to complete repairs within the 32-hour timeframe.

Guidelines for Residents During the Outage

Residents must store at least 50 liters of water per person for drinking and essential use. Additionally, they should avoid laundry, car washing, and other non-essential water activities during the outage. It is important to keep taps closed to prevent damage when water supply resumes. Moreover, residents should use tanker water sparingly and sanitize containers before use.

Broader Winter Maintenance Plan

This shutdown forms part of Tshwane’s wider winter maintenance plan running from May to July 2025. The City has already completed upgrades to the Mapleton System in June and plans to inspect the Palmiet System in July. These initiatives aim to reduce future outages by 40% and improve water pressure stability across the city.

Essential Repairs for Future Reliability

Although the 32-hour shutdown will cause inconvenience, these repairs are vital to prevent longer disruptions. Therefore, the City urges residents to cooperate with water-saving measures and stay updated through municipal social media channels. The City apologizes for the inconvenience but stresses that these efforts will ensure a more resilient and reliable water network for Tshwane.
