Getting a new passport or smart ID in South Africa no longer requires a frustrating visit to a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) branch. Thanks to a partnership between the DHA and major South African banks, citizens can now apply for these essential documents at select bank branches across the country—saving time, avoiding long queues, and enjoying a more efficient process.

The Home Affairs Problem: Long Queues, Offline Systems, and Frustration
For years, South Africans have voiced their dissatisfaction with the Home Affairs experience. Social media and review platforms are filled with complaints about endless queues, rude staff, and offline systems. Even former Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi acknowledged these issues, revealing efforts to improve service delivery by upgrading technology and deploying mobile units. However, while these measures have helped, they haven’t eliminated the daily struggles many citizens face at DHA offices.
The eHomeAffairs Solution: Apply For A Smart ID and Passport Online
In 2015, the Department of Home Affairs launched eHomeAffairs, a digital platform that allows South Africans to apply for passports and smart ID cards online and complete the biometric capture process at participating bank branches. This collaboration operates under a memorandum of understanding, where DHA employees are stationed at bank branches to process these services securely.
The process is seamless and fully digital. Users can apply online, pay via the eHomeAffairs platform, and then book an appointment at a participating bank branch for biometrics (including fingerprints and a photograph). Once the document is ready, the applicant is notified and can collect it from the same branch.
Banks That Offer Smart ID and Passport Services
As of now, there are 30 bank branches across six major banks in South Africa offering smart ID and passport services. These banks include:
- Standard Bank (9 branches)
- FNB (First National Bank) (7 branches)
- Nedbank (6 branches)
- Absa (6 branches)
- Discovery Bank (1 branch)
- Investec (1 branch)
This initiative has proven popular and successful, with millions already using the service. Due to high demand, banks have announced plans to expand the service further. If all goes according to plan, the number of participating branches will increase from 30 to 64 in the near future.
Upcoming Expansions
- FNB plans to add 18 new eHomeAffairs branches.
- Absa has 12 additional branches ready for activation.
- Discovery Bank will open 4 new locations in Cape Town (Sea Point and Century City), Pretoria, and Durban (Umhlanga).
- Nedbank is also looking to expand, though the number of new branches is still unconfirmed.
These expansions aim to make the service more accessible, especially in provinces currently underserved.
Where Is the Service Available?
Currently, the smart ID and passport service through banks is available in the following provinces:
- Gauteng
- Western Cape
- Eastern Cape
- Limpopo
- Mpumalanga
- KwaZulu-Natal
Notably, the service is not yet available in the Free State or North West, but addressing this gap is on the department’s agenda.
