Honouring the Role of Traditional Health Practitioners
Across townships, villages, and cities, Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs) remain trusted figures. They are often the first point of care in communities where clinics are scarce or difficult to access. Their role extends beyond physical healing, offering cultural continuity and emotional support.
By establishing a new Traditional Health Practitioners’ structure in Mogale City, Gauteng has formalised this role, creating a platform for leadership, collaboration, and governance. This development reflects a growing recognition that traditional healers are not on the fringes but at the heart of healthcare delivery in the province.
From Ancestral Knowledge to Scientific Validation
The push toward evidence-based traditional medicine marks a significant shift. For too long, traditional healing has thrived outside formal systems, valued by communities but questioned by policymakers. Gauteng’s new approach emphasises research partnerships with universities and scientific institutions to validate traditional practices.
By doing so, the province aims to strengthen credibility, protect indigenous knowledge, and ensure that safe, proven methods complement Western medical approaches. This collaboration acknowledges that healthcare does not have to be divided but can instead draw strength from multiple systems.
Building Skills and Capacity
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is investing in training programmes that go beyond healing practices. Traditional Health Practitioners are receiving skills in leadership, conflict management, financial literacy, and first response.
They are also being equipped to educate communities about chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and mental health. By broadening their expertise, the province is positioning THPs as holistic caregivers who can respond to both traditional and contemporary health challenges.
Addressing Urgent Health Needs Together
One of the strongest examples of this integration came during Gauteng’s recent measles outbreak. Traditional Health Practitioners were called on to use their community influence to encourage immunisation and counter misinformation.
Their voices carried weight in reassuring parents and guardians, proving that trusted community leaders can play a crucial role in modern health campaigns. This approach demonstrates how traditional medicine and public health strategies can complement one another when united by evidence and trust.
Aligning with Global Trends
South Africa’s efforts are not happening in isolation. Globally, the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 has called for stronger evidence, regulation, and integration of traditional medicine into health systems. Locally, the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council of South Africa (ITHPCSA) is laying the groundwork for national oversight.
By aligning with these frameworks, Gauteng positions itself as a leader in blending traditional knowledge with scientific progress.
