The Gauteng Department of Health has launched an important initiative urging former mine workers in Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas to register for medical screenings. They are also encouraged to claim unclaimed social security benefits. This programme addresses occupational diseases and financial entitlements owed to ex-miners. These individuals contributed significantly to South Africa’s economy but often left the industry without proper healthcare or compensation.

Background and Purpose of the Programme
Mining has historically been a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy. Yet many ex-mine workers suffer from work-related illnesses such as silicosis, tuberculosis (TB), and hearing loss. Many have not received the social security benefits or medical assistance they are entitled to. The Gauteng Department of Health, in partnership with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases (MBOD), has initiated a programme. This program aims to trace, register, and screen these workers. The goal is to ensure eligible ex-miners and their families receive due financial compensation and healthcare support.
Registration Details and Venues
Phase Two of the registration programme is currently underway in Ekurhuleni, running from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays. Former mine workers are encouraged to register at designated venues, including:

- Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital – Training Centre Hall (Nurses Home Area), Vosloorus
- Bertha Gxowa Hospital – Dr. Clarence Mini Hall (formerly Kobie Muller Hall), Germiston
- Tambo Memorial Hospital – Villa Nerina Hall, next to NHLS Lab, Boksburg
- Pholosong Hospital – Auditorium and Lapa, Tsakane
Attendees must bring all relevant identification documents, such as the Makhulu-skop (Mineworker’s Identity card), national ID, and any paperwork from their mining companies. Families of deceased miners may also be eligible to claim benefits. They are encouraged to register.
Medical Screening and Benefits
During registration, ex-mine workers undergo free medical screenings to assess occupational diseases. Those found eligible will be contacted by MBOD to assist with claims for social security benefits. These may include possible provident or pension funds. The programme represents not only financial redress but also a commitment to restoring dignity. It aims to provide justice to workers who endured hazardous conditions.
Extended Registration Due to High Demand
The initial registration period began on 24 March 2025 and was set to end on 4 April. However, due to high demand, officials extended the deadline to 21 July – 22 August 2025 (weekdays, 08h00–16h00, Ekurhuleni) to accommodate those who missed the original dates. This extension aims to accommodate those who missed the initial dates. Over 7,000 ex-mine workers and their beneficiaries have already registered successfully during the first two weeks of the programme.
