    OVK Grain, part of the renowned OVK Agriculture family, is offering an exceptional career opportunity for dynamic and ambitious graduates. With a focus on the grain industry, OVK Grain invites applications for their 24-month Graduate Programme.

    This programme is designed to provide hands-on experience and contribute directly to the company’s operations. In this article, we provide an overview of the programme, the requirements for applicants, the key skills needed, and the responsibilities graduates will undertake.

    OVK Agriculture has established a solid reputation within the agricultural sector, offering a wide range of services across various domains. OVK Grain operates within this family, focusing on managing and trading grain products. As part of the OVK Grain family, graduates will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the grain industry and develop their careers.

    The 24-month Graduate Programme allows candidates to gain a deep understanding of day-to-day operations in the grain department. This hands-on training offers candidates the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the industry, particularly in grain-related operations.

    Core Purpose of the Programme

    The Graduate Programme’s primary goal is to help graduates develop into well-rounded professionals capable of handling tasks in administration, marketing, procurement, and problem-solving within the grain department. Over the 24 months, graduates will be exposed to various aspects of the grain industry. In turn, they will gain experience working with internal and external stakeholders, handling critical tasks, and overcoming challenges.

    By the end of the programme, participants will be prepared to take on more responsibility and contribute significantly to the company’s growth.

    Minimum Requirements for Applicants

    Candidates who wish to apply for the Graduate Programme must meet specific educational and personal criteria:

    • A relevant tertiary qualification in Marketing, Agricultural Economics, Risk Management, Accounting, or Industrial Engineering.
    • A SAFEX qualification will be an advantage, especially for those involved in trading and market-related activities.
    • A genuine interest in the agricultural environment, particularly in grain, is crucial.

    Key Skills and Attributes

    OVK Grain looks for candidates who possess certain skills and attributes. These qualities will ensure success within the Graduate Programme and contribute to the candidate’s overall development:

    1. Communication Skills
      Since graduates will frequently interact with both internal teams and external customers, strong communication skills in both Afrikaans and English are essential.
    2. Problem-Solving Abilities
      The ideal candidate should be able to solve problems efficiently and with minimal disruption to operations. Strong analytical skills will be a significant asset in this role.
    3. Numeracy and Accuracy
      Graduates will manage financial data and inventory records. Therefore, attention to detail and strong numeracy skills are crucial for success.
    4. Interpersonal Skills
      Graduates must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage conflicts, especially in a collaborative work environment.
    5. Independence and Ability to Work Under Pressure
      Self-motivation is essential. Graduates should be able to work independently and handle pressure without compromising productivity.
    6. Organisational and Time Management Skills
      Being well-organized and able to prioritize tasks effectively will help graduates manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.

    Graduate Programme Responsibilities

    Throughout the 24-month programme, graduates will take on a variety of responsibilities. These tasks are designed to help them develop both technical and practical skills, equipping them for future roles in the agricultural industry:

    • Financial Reconciliations
      Graduates will help reconcile accounts related to inventory, receivables, and payables. This ensures the department maintains accurate financial records.
    • Dealing with Deviations
      Graduates will address and resolve discrepancies that arise in processes, ensuring smooth operations across various departments.
    • Financial Reporting
      Graduates will compile income statement analyses and variance reports. These tasks will provide valuable experience in financial management and reporting.
    • Client Liaison
      Regular communication with internal and external clients will form part of the role. Graduates will help maintain positive relationships and address customer needs.
    • Ensuring Completeness of Contracts
      Graduates will be responsible for ensuring that all purchase and sales contracts are correctly completed, aligned with company policies, and fully executed.
    • SAFEX Trading and Reconciliations
      Graduates will gain hands-on experience in SAFEX trading and reconciliation. These activities are integral to understanding the grain market and trading processes.
    • Inventory Management
      Part of the role includes verifying inventory and ensuring it is accurately documented and accounted for.
    • Improving Productivity and Processes
      Graduates will help identify opportunities to improve processes, particularly at OVK Grain’s silos. This includes implementing measures to enhance productivity.
    • General Administrative Support
      Graduates will assist with day-to-day administrative tasks to ensure smooth operations across departments.
