Many students worry that a low APS Score will limit their educational and career opportunities. However, several study options are available even if your APS score is lower than expected. From higher certificates and diploma programs to TVET college courses and bridging programs, you can still find a path to success.

This guide explores various courses and institutions that accept students with low APS scores and provides actionable steps to further your education.

    Understanding the APS Score

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a system used by South African universities and colleges to determine whether students meet the entry requirements for specific courses. A higher APS increases access to more competitive programs, but students with a low APS score still have various study options.

    Courses Available for Students

If your APS score is low, you may still qualify for the following courses:

    1. Higher Certificate Programs

Higher certificates typically require an APS of 15-19, making them accessible to students with lower scores. These one-year programs provide foundational knowledge and can lead to further studies.

    • Higher Certificate in Business Management
    • Higher Certificate in IT Support Services
    • Higher Certificate in Marketing
    • Higher Certificate in Office Administration
    • Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Development

    2. Diploma Programs

Some diploma programs accept students with an APS of 19-22. These programs focus on practical skills and prepare students for careers in various fields.

    • Diploma in Human Resource Management
    • Diploma in Public Relations
    • Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality
    • Diploma in Information Technology
    • Diploma in Journalism

    3. TVET College Courses

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges provide an alternative for students with lower APS scores. Many TVET colleges require only a minimum pass in Grade 9, 10, or 11.

    • National Certificate (Vocational) in Engineering and Related Design
    • National Certificate (Vocational) in Hospitality Studies
    • National Certificate (Vocational) in Business Management
    • National Certificate (Vocational) in Education and Development
    • National Certificate (Vocational) in Tourism

    4. Short Courses and Skills Programs

Short courses are a great way to gain practical skills without strict APS requirements. Many institutions offer industry-relevant training in:

    • Graphic Design
    • Web Development
    • Project Management
    • Digital Marketing
    • Photography

    5. Bridging Courses and Extended Degree Programs

Bridging courses help students improve their APS scores and gain admission into diploma or degree programs. Some universities and colleges offer extended degree programs with foundation years to support students with lower APS scores.

    • Bridging Course in Science, Engineering, and Technology
    • Bridging Course in Education
    • Foundation Program in Business Studies

Institutions That Accept Low APS Scores

Several institutions cater to students with lower APS scores, including:

    • TVET Colleges (e.g., False Bay TVET College, Ekurhuleni West TVET College)
    • Private Colleges (e.g., Rosebank College, Boston City Campus, Damelin)
    • Universities with Extended Programs (e.g., University of South Africa (UNISA), Walter Sisulu University, North-West University’s foundation programs)

What to Do If Your APS Score is Too Low

If your APS score is lower than required, consider the following options:

    1. Improve Your Matric Results – Upgrade your matric results by rewriting subjects through a second-chance program.
    2. Consider TVET Colleges – These institutions provide practical skills with lower entry requirements.
    3. Apply for a Bridging Course – These courses can help improve your qualifications for future studies.
    4. Look Into Short Courses – Gaining practical skills through short courses can enhance your career prospects.
    5. Gain Work Experience – Some institutions consider work experience as an alternative entry requirement.

A low APS score does not mean the end of your academic journey. By exploring alternative study options like higher certificates, diplomas, TVET courses, and bridging programs, you can still pursue a successful career.
