Walter Sisulu University (WSU), established in 2005 and named after the esteemed South African liberation hero Walter Sisulu, is a comprehensive institution located in the Eastern Cape. With a commitment to urban renewal, rural development, and impactful education, WSU offers a diverse range of over 186 accredited courses across its four campuses: Buffalo City, Butterworth, Mthatha, and Komani.

    Walter Sisulu University Applications 2026

This guide provides detailed information on the application process for the 2026 academic year.

    Application Opening and Closing Dates

    • Opening Date: June 1
    • Closing Date: October 31

It’s imperative to submit applications within this timeframe, as late applications will not be accepted. Early submission is advisable to ensure all requirements are met and to enhance the chances of securing a place in competitive programs.

    Faculties and Courses Offered

WSU encompasses several faculties, each offering a variety of programs:

    • Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology: Diplomas in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specializations.
    • Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), Nursing, and other health-related programs.
    • Faculty of Education: Specializations in Foundation Phase Teaching and Senior Phase & Further Education and Training (FET) Teaching.
    • Faculty of Law, Humanities & Social Sciences: Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Social Work, and related disciplines.
    • Faculty of Economics & Financial Sciences: Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting, and other finance-related courses.

For a comprehensive list of courses and specific admission requirements, prospective students should consult the official WSU prospectus, available on the university’s website.

    General Admission Requirements

Admission criteria vary depending on the program level:

    • Higher Certificate Programs: A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution.Westonaria University+1Westonaria University+1
    • Diploma Programs: An NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching, and an achievement rating of 3 (40-49%) or better in four recognized 20-credit subjects, excluding Life Orientation.Westonaria University+1Westonaria University+1
    • Bachelor’s Degree Programs: An NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching, and an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in four recognized 20-credit subjects, excluding Life Orientation.

Specific programs may have additional subject requirements. For instance, engineering courses often require proficiency in Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Detailed admission requirements are outlined on WSU’s official website.

    Admission Point Score (APS) Calculation

WSU utilizes the Admission Point Score (APS) system to assess applicants’ academic performance. The APS is calculated by summing the point scores of a student’s best six subjects. Each percentage mark is converted to a point score based on WSU’s APS conversion table. For example, a percentage between 90-100% equates to 8 points, 80-89% to 7 points, and so forth. Life Orientation is included in the APS calculation only for certain faculties, such as Education. Prospective students can find detailed APS calculation examples and conversion tables on WSU’s admissions page.W
