The University of Pretoria SRC has launched an important fundraising campaign, A Re Ageng Bokamoso, to assist students who are facing financial difficulties. The campaign aims to raise R5 million to help students register and continue their studies without financial barriers. To strengthen the impact, University of Pretoria Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Francis Petersen, has committed that the university will match every rand donated, effectively doubling the contributions received.

The University of Pretoria SRC recognizes that financial hardship is one of the biggest obstacles preventing students from accessing and completing their education. By launching A Re Ageng Bokamoso, which translates to “Let’s Build the Future”, the University of Pretoria SRC aims to provide relief to struggling students so they can focus on their studies without financial stress.

    Urgency of the Campaign

The campaign comes at a critical time as the registration deadline for the 2025 academic year is fast approaching on 21 February 2025. One of the main objectives of the fundraising effort is to assist students with their first registration payment, ensuring they can enroll in their courses and continue their academic journey.

For many students, the financial burden of university fees is overwhelming, often resulting in missed registration deadlines or academic exclusion. The University of Pretoria SRC is determined to prevent deserving students from falling behind simply because they cannot afford the upfront registration costs.

According to University of Pretoria SRC President, Vhutshilo (Chichi) Muambadzi, the initiative is not just about registration; it is about supporting students throughout their academic journey:

“These initiatives help students to navigate campus life and achieve academic success while also addressing challenges that may arise outside the classroom. This ensures that students not only gain access to higher education, but are also supported throughout their journey until they graduate.”

Addressing Student Debt and Financial Hardships

Beyond assisting students with registration fees, the University of Pretoria SRC is also committed to tackling the issue of student debt. Many students who excel academically are unable to graduate because of outstanding university fees, which prevents them from receiving their degree certificates and limits their employment opportunities.

Thousands of graduates in South Africa struggle with student debt, which affects their ability to secure jobs and build their futures. The University of Pretoria SRC understands that addressing student debt is crucial for long-term success and economic growth.

By ensuring that students receive financial assistance, the University of Pretoria SRC is actively working to remove financial barriers and create opportunities for students to graduate and enter the workforce with confidence.

How to Support A Re Ageng Bokamoso

The University of Pretoria SRC is calling on students, alumni, corporate partners, and the broader UP community to support the A Re Ageng Bokamoso campaign. Whether through small donations or large corporate sponsorships, every contribution will go a long way in ensuring that no student is left behind due to financial difficulties.

The UP SRC believes that education is a shared responsibility and that through collective effort, students can be supported in their journey towards academic success.

The Impact of A Re Ageng Bokamoso

The University of Pretoria is one of South Africa’s leading institutions, known for academic excellence and innovation. However, financial constraints remain a major challenge for many students. The University of Pretoria SRC is taking a proactive approach to ensure that every student, regardless of financial background, has the opportunity to complete their education.

This initiative aligns with national efforts to address student funding challenges, particularly in light of ongoing economic pressures on South African universities and students. The University of Pretoria SRC is leading the way in finding solutions that directly benefit students, ensuring that they are not held back by financial struggles.

A Community Effort to Build a Brighter Future

Education is one of the most powerful tools for personal and societal growth. The University of Pretoria SRC understands that every student deserves the opportunity to learn, graduate, and contribute meaningfully to society.

By donating to the A Re Ageng Bokamoso campaign, the University of Pretoria community can come together to break financial barriers and support students in need.

Now is the time to stand together and make a difference.
    Let’s Build the Future, Together!
