The University of Pretoria SRC has launched an important fundraising campaign, A Re Ageng Bokamoso, to assist students who are facing financial difficulties. The campaign aims to raise R5 million to help students register and continue their studies without financial barriers. To strengthen the impact, University of Pretoria Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Francis Petersen, has committed that the university will match every rand donated, effectively doubling the contributions received.
The University of Pretoria SRC recognizes that financial hardship is one of the biggest obstacles preventing students from accessing and completing their education. By launching A Re Ageng Bokamoso, which translates to “Let’s Build the Future”, the University of Pretoria SRC aims to provide relief to struggling students so they can focus on their studies without financial stress.
Urgency of the Campaign
The campaign comes at a critical time as the registration deadline for the 2025 academic year is fast approaching on 21 February 2025. One of the main objectives of the fundraising effort is to assist students with their first registration payment, ensuring they can enroll in their courses and continue their academic journey.
For many students, the financial burden of university fees is overwhelming, often resulting in missed registration deadlines or academic exclusion. The University of Pretoria SRC is determined to prevent deserving students from falling behind simply because they cannot afford the upfront registration costs.
According to University of Pretoria SRC President, Vhutshilo (Chichi) Muambadzi, the initiative is not just about registration; it is about supporting students throughout their academic journey:
“These initiatives help students to navigate campus life and achieve academic success while also addressing challenges that may arise outside the classroom. This ensures that students not only gain access to higher education, but are also supported throughout their journey until they graduate.”
Addressing Student Debt and Financial Hardships
Beyond assisting students with registration fees, the University of Pretoria SRC is also committed to tackling the issue of student debt. Many students who excel academically are unable to graduate because of outstanding university fees, which prevents them from receiving their degree certificates and limits their employment opportunities.
Thousands of graduates in South Africa struggle with student debt, which affects their ability to secure jobs and build their futures. The University of Pretoria SRC understands that addressing student debt is crucial for long-term success and economic growth.
By ensuring that students receive financial assistance, the University of Pretoria SRC is actively working to remove financial barriers and create opportunities for students to graduate and enter the workforce with confidence.
