The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa’s top-ranked university and one of the most prestigious institutions on the continent.

University of Cape Town Applications 2026

If you’re considering applying to UCT for the 2026 academic year, this guide will provide all the essential details about application dates, requirements, and procedures to ensure a smooth application process.

    1. Application Opening and Closing Dates

UCT applications for the 2026 academic year are expected to open in April 2025 and close in July 2025. These dates may be subject to change, so it is crucial to check UCT’s official website regularly for updates.

    2. Who Can Apply?

    Applications are open to:

    • South African and international students
    • First-time undergraduate students
    • Postgraduate students
    • Transfer students from other institutions

    3. How to Apply

All applications must be submitted online via the UCT Application Portal. Follow these steps to apply:

    1. Visit the UCT website at www.uct.ac.za.
    2. Navigate to the “Admissions” section and select the relevant application category (undergraduate or postgraduate).
    3. Register an account on the application portal.
    4. Fill in the required personal, academic, and contact details.
    5. Upload the necessary supporting documents (see section below).
    6. Pay the non-refundable application fee (if applicable).
    7. Submit your application before the deadline.
    8. Keep an eye on your email for further communication regarding your application status.

    4. Required Documents

The following documents must be uploaded when applying:

    • Certified copy of your ID or passport (for international applicants)
    • Certified copy of your Grade 11 final results and latest Grade 12 results (for undergraduate applicants)
    • Final matric results (if already completed)
    • Academic transcripts (for transfer and postgraduate students)
    • Proof of payment of the application fee (if applicable)
    • Additional program-specific documents (e.g., portfolios for architecture applicants)

    5. Application Fees

For South African applicants, the standard application fee is R100, while international applicants pay R300. However, fee waivers may be available for qualifying students. Ensure that payment is made before submitting the application.

    6. Admission Requirements

Each faculty at UCT has its own admission criteria. However, the general undergraduate requirements include:

    • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s Pass
    • A minimum Admission Points Score (APS), which varies by program
    • Specific subject requirements, depending on the faculty (e.g., Mathematics and Physical Sciences for Engineering programs)
    • Competitive programs may have additional selection tests, interviews, or portfolio submissions

International students must have qualifications equivalent to the South African matric certificate, verified by Universities South Africa (USAf).

    7. Selection and Offers

Once applications close, UCT will review all submissions and start issuing provisional offers based on Grade 11 and mid-year Grade 12 results. Final offers are made once matric results are released in January 2026.

Applicants can track their application status via the UCT online portal.

    8. Financial Aid and Scholarships

UCT offers several financial aid options, including:

    • The UCT Financial Assistance Programme for South African students from low-income families
    • National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding for eligible applicants
    • Various merit-based scholarships and bursaries International students can apply for external funding sources or UCT-specific international scholarships.

    9. Student Housing and Accommodation

UCT provides several on-campus and off-campus housing options. To apply for residence:

    • Indicate interest on your application form.
    • Apply for housing as early as possible, as spaces are limited.
    • Priority is given to first-year and financially needy students.

    10. Key Contact Information
