The University of South Africa (UNISA) has partnered with Microsoft to offer students and academic staff free access to Microsoft Learn and Microsoft Learn for Students. This collaboration provides a wide range of tools and learning resources to boost digital literacy, equip students with practical tech skills, and prepare them for success in an increasingly digital world.

    What is Microsoft Learn?

Microsoft Learn is a free, interactive learning platform created by Microsoft to help users build skills through hands-on, practical training. It features role-based learning paths that focus on real-world applications across Microsoft technologies such as Microsoft 365, Azure, Power Platform, and more.

The platform is ideal for students who want to explore careers in areas like software development, cloud computing, data analysis, and IT support. Each module or learning path includes quizzes, coding challenges, and practical labs to reinforce understanding.

    Benefits for UNISA Students

Through this initiative, students have access to a variety of valuable Microsoft resources and benefits:

    1. Free Microsoft 365 Apps

students can access Microsoft Office 365 at no cost. This includes popular productivity tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, along with 1TB of cloud storage via OneDrive. These tools are essential for academic tasks such as assignments, presentations, collaboration, and communication.

    2. Azure Student Credits

Eligible students receive $100 in free Azure credits annually. These credits allow students to explore Microsoft’s powerful cloud computing services, including app development, virtual machines, databases, and AI tools. This is especially useful for students in IT and computer science programs.

    3. LinkedIn Learning Access

Students also gain access to LinkedIn Learning, a platform that offers thousands of expert-led courses in business, creative, and tech fields. Whether you’re interested in digital marketing, project management, or programming, LinkedIn Learning helps build in-demand skills at your own pace.

    Getting Started with Microsoft Learn

    Getting started is simple:

    • First, make sure you’re a full-time UNISA student with a valid institutional email address.
    • Go to the Microsoft Learn platform and sign in using your UNISA email.
    • Complete your profile to unlock access to student-specific resources.
    • Explore various learning paths and modules, selecting those that match your interests or career goals.

You can learn at your own pace and even track your progress as you move through different modules. Completion of certain paths may also lead to industry-recognized Microsoft certifications (some of which are free for students).

Additional Training and Courses Offered by UNISA

To support digital learning, UNISA offers additional training resources:

    – Basic Skills in Microsoft 365

This is a free online course that introduces students to the basics of Microsoft 365. It’s ideal for beginners or anyone needing to improve their digital literacy.

    – STU-400 Workshop

UNISA also hosts the “Basic Skills in Microsoft 365 for Digital Learners” workshop. It is conducted over five days and is available both online and in person. The workshop provides hands-on experience with Microsoft tools such as Outlook, Teams, and Excel—skills that are increasingly essential in academic and professional environments.

    Technology-Enhanced Learning Support

UNISA’s broader technology-enhanced learning initiative ensures that students have access to the tools and training they need to succeed:

    • Computer Labs: On-campus labs are available for students who may not have access to digital resources at home.
    • Online Tutorials: The institution provides step-by-step guides and videos to help students become comfortable using Microsoft Office 365 and other platforms.
    • Workshops and Training Sessions: Regularly hosted sessions assist students in mastering the digital tools that support both learning and future employment.

The institution and Microsoft partnership gives students a valuable opportunity to build their digital skills, boost employability, and succeed in a fast-changing world. Whether you’re studying education, business, or IT, taking advantage of Microsoft Learn and related resources is a smart move for any student. It’s not just about using software—it’s about gaining the skills to thrive in the modern workplace.
