The University of South Africa (UNISA) is Africa’s leading open distance learning institution, offering flexible study options to students across South Africa and the world. If you’re planning to study at UNISA in 2026, it’s important to understand the application process, requirements, and timelines to ensure a successful start to your academic journey.

    UNISA Applications 2026

    1. Who Should Apply?

You need to apply for admission to the institution for the 2026 academic year if:

    • You are a first-time applicant to the institution.
    • You are a current UNISA student applying to a new qualification.
    • You previously applied and were not offered placement.
    • You were offered placement but did not register.
    • You are completing a higher certificate and wish to continue to a degree or diploma.

    2. Types of Qualifications Offered

The institution offers the following qualifications:

    • Higher Certificates
    • Advanced Certificates
    • Diplomas
    • Advanced Diplomas
    • Bachelor’s Degrees
    • Honours Degrees
    • Postgraduate Diplomas
    • Master’s and Doctoral Degrees
    • Short Learning Programmes (SLPs)

Each qualification has specific admission requirements, so it’s important to review these before applying.

    3. Application Opening and Closing Dates (Expected for 2026)

While exact dates for the 2026 application cycle have not yet been officially confirmed, based on past years, the expected timelines are:

    • Undergraduate qualifications: Applications expected to open in August 2025 and close around October 2025.
    • Honours degrees & Postgraduate diplomas: Also expected to follow similar timelines.
    • Master’s & Doctoral degrees: Applications may open earlier, often in September, and close by November.
    • Short Learning Programmes: Application dates vary by programme and are typically announced individually.

Always check the official UNISA website closer to the date for confirmed timeframes.

    4. How to Apply

    Here is a step-by-step process:

    Step 1: Choose Your Qualification

Browse through UNISA’s list of qualifications and choose one that suits your career goals and meets your academic eligibility.

    Step 2: Check Admission Requirements

Each qualification has specific admission criteria. You’ll need:

    • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent.
    • For postgraduate studies, a completed relevant undergraduate qualification.
    • Proof of English language proficiency if required.

    Step 3: Gather Your Documents

    Typical required documents include:

    • Certified copy of your ID or passport.
    • Certified copy of your school qualifications.
    • Academic transcripts (for postgraduate applications).
    • Marriage certificate or divorce decree (if applicable).
    • Sworn translations of documents if not in English or Afrikaans.

Ensure your documents are scanned clearly and certified within the last three months.

    Step 4: Apply Online

All applications must be submitted online through UNISA’s application system. You’ll need to create a myUnisa account to start the application.

You can apply for up to two qualifications, and the institution will process them in the order of your preference.

Step 5: Pay the Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee (approximately R135) must be paid after receiving a student number from UNISA. Use your student number as a reference when paying.

Note: Without payment, your application will not be processed.

Step 6: Wait for a Response

After submitting your application and payment, wait for the institution to process it. Successful applicants will receive an offer which they must accept online within the specified timeframe.

    5. What Happens After Acceptance?

    Once you accept the offer:

    • You will be guided through the registration process.
    • Registration for first-semester modules typically opens in January.
    • You must pay a minimum registration fee to activate your student account and access learning materials.

    • Apply Early: Don’t wait until the last minute. Spaces fill up quickly, especially for high-demand qualifications.
    • Keep Copies: Always keep copies of your submitted documents and proof of payment.
    • Use a Reliable Email: UNISA will communicate with you via email, so ensure it’s active and regularly checked.
    • Track Your Application: You can check your application status online through your myUnisa account.

By understanding and following the the institution’s application process for 2026, you can ensure a smooth and successful path to tertiary education. Whether you’re entering higher education for the first time or advancing your qualifications, planning ahead is key.
