The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Faculty of Humanities offers a range of Online Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) designed to meet the growing demand for accessible, career-focused education. These programmes are ideal for professionals looking to sharpen their skills, individuals seeking personal development, and students aiming to strengthen their academic foundation or gain new competencies.

What Are Online Short Learning Programmes?

Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) are concise, focused courses that provide practical knowledge and skills in a short period. Unlike full degrees or diplomas, SLPs can be completed quickly—often over a few weeks or months—and are aimed at bridging gaps in knowledge, enhancing existing skills, or exploring new areas of interest. UJ’s SLPs are aligned with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) and are presented at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 5 and above. This means they are academically rigorous and can be a stepping stone to more formal qualifications.

Why Choose a UJ Online SLP?

UJ’s Faculty of Humanities provides SLPs that are flexible, relevant, and industry-informed. Delivered in online or blended formats, these programmes cater to the needs of busy professionals and remote learners. Key benefits of these programmes include:

    • Flexibility: Learn at your own pace, from anywhere in the world.
    • Relevance: Courses address current issues and workplace demands.
    • Affordability: Short courses are more affordable than full-time degrees and don’t require a long-term commitment.
    • Professional Growth: Gain valuable credentials and practical skills that can be immediately applied in your career.

Available Courses and What You’ll Learn

The Faculty of Humanities offers a wide variety of online SLPs, touching on themes such as communication, ethics, culture, and technology. Here are some standout courses:

    • Digital Public Relations: This course equips participants with skills in digital communication strategies, online branding, and the use of social media tools to manage an organisation’s public image. It’s especially useful for PR professionals, marketers, and business owners wanting to expand their digital reach.
    • Ethics for Artificial Intelligence Use: Designed for professionals working with or studying AI, this course explores the ethical concerns surrounding AI technologies, particularly large language models. It covers topics such as data privacy, fairness, and the social implications of automation.
    • Communication Skills for the 21st Century Professional: This course develops key communication competencies needed in modern workplaces, including active listening, intercultural communication, and digital communication strategies. It is ideal for anyone in leadership, management, or client-facing roles.
    • Ukufunda Ukukhuluma isiZulu (Learning to Speak isiZulu): Aimed at beginners, this course introduces basic isiZulu language skills, enabling participants to communicate more effectively in multilingual South African settings. It supports cultural understanding and inclusivity in the workplace.
    • Conversational Sesotho sa Leboa (Northern Sotho): This course is tailored to those who wish to learn Northern Sotho for personal or professional reasons. It is particularly helpful for individuals working in education, health, or community development sectors.

These courses are designed with practical outcomes in mind, making them highly applicable to real-world situations.
