If you’re planning to apply to the University of the Free State (UFS) for the 2026 academic year, understanding the National Benchmark Tests is crucial. The NBTs assess academic readiness for university-level studies and are a significant component of the UFS admissions process.

What Are the National Benchmark Tests?

The assessments were developed to evaluate academic readiness for higher education. There are two components:

    • Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL): Assesses your understanding of academic language and basic numerical skills.
    • Mathematics (MAT): Measures high school-level maths skills relevant to university study.

The AQL is required for all UFS applicants, while the MAT test is only needed for programmes involving mathematics, such as those in Health Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Economic and Management Sciences.tics, such as Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Economic and Management Sciences.

    Are the Tests Compulsory?

Yes. All prospective UFS students must take the test(s) relevant to their programme before registration. It’s best to write them during your Grade 12 year, so your results are ready in time for application decisions.

    Registration and Test Dates

Registration for the NBTs opens on 1 April 2025. You should register at least three weeks before your intended test date. For applicants to the Faculty of Health Sciences, the NBTs must be written by 7 July 2025. For all other applicants, it’s advisable to complete the NBTs well before the application closing date to avoid delays.

    How to Register

Register online through the official platform. Make sure to have your ID or passport, an email address, and payment details ready. During registration, indicate that your results should be sent to UFS.

    Venues and Remote Options

You can write at designated centres around South Africa, including UFS campuses in Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa. For those unable to travel, remote writing is available, with specific technical requirements.

    Cost of the Tests

The cost for the AQL test is R185, and for both the AQL and MAT tests, it’s R370. If you require a re-mark, an additional fee of R250 applies. Payment is made during the registration process.

    Accessing and Sending Your Results

After completing the NBTs, results are typically available within four weeks. You can access your results by logging into your NBT account. UFS will receive your results directly, provided you’ve indicated UFS as a recipient during registration. If you need to send your results to additional institutions, follow the instructions on the NBT site.

Importance of the NBTs in UFS Admissions

UFS uses test results in several ways:

    • Selection Process: For programmes like those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, NBT results are a key part of the selection criteria.
    • Placement: NBT scores help determine the most suitable academic support and course placement for students.
    • Curriculum Development: The results assist UFS in tailoring programmes to meet students’ academic needs.

NBT results are considered alongside your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results and other programme-specific requirements.

    Contact Information for Assistance

If you have questions about the NBTs, you can contact UFS representatives:

    • Bloemfontein Campus:
      • Contact Person: Lerato Marumo
      • Email: [email protected]

    Final Tips

    • Prepare Thoroughly: Make use of preparation resources to improve your performance.
    • Stay Updated: Regularly check for updates on test dates, venues, and requirements from both the NBT and UFS platforms.

By understanding and preparing for the tests, you’ll boost your chances of a successful application to the University of the Free State for 2026.
