Gauteng is home to some of South Africa’s top Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. These institutions play a vital role in equipping students with practical skills that lead directly to employment, self-employment, or further education. Whether you’re a recent matriculant or someone looking to upskill, Gauteng’s TVET colleges offer accessible and affordable pathways to career success.

Full List of Public TVET Colleges in Gauteng

There are eight public TVET colleges in Gauteng, operating multiple campuses across the province. These colleges are accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET):

    1. Central Johannesburg TVET College (CJC)
    2. Ekurhuleni East TVET College (EEC)
    3. Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC)

    5. South West Gauteng TVET College (SWGC)
    6. Tshwane North TVET College (TNC)

Each college has several campuses catering to students in urban and peri-urban areas, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Germiston, Vereeniging, and Krugersdorp.

Courses Offered at TVET Colleges in Gauteng

TVET colleges offer a variety of National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)], NATED (N1–N6), and occupational programmes. These qualifications are aimed at preparing students for specific careers.

    1. NC(V) Programmes (3 Years, Levels 2–4)

These are offered after Grade 9 and combine theory with practical skills. Popular NC(V) programmes include:

    • Engineering and Related Design
    • Office Administration
    • Marketing
    • Finance, Economics and Accounting
    • Information Technology and Computer Science
    • Tourism
    • Hospitality
    • Safety in Society
    • Civil Engineering and Building Construction

    2. NATED Programmes (N1–N6)

These are typically offered in Engineering and Business Studies and require either a matric certificate or N3/N4-level qualification for entry.

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Business Management
    • Financial Management
    • Management Assistant
    • Human Resource Management
    • Public Management
    • Marketing Management

Once students complete N6, they can apply for a National Diploma after 18 months of relevant work experience.

    3. Artisan and Skills Development Courses

TVET colleges also offer learnerships, apprenticeships, and skills programmes such as:

    • Welding
    • Plumbing
    • Bricklaying
    • Hairdressing
    • Early Childhood Development
    • Computer Literacy
    • Motor Mechanics

These are often shorter and cater to the immediate needs of the job market.

How to Apply to a TVET College in Gauteng

Applying to a TVET college is a straightforward process. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Choose Your College and Programme

Research which college offers the course you’re interested in. Visit the official college website or contact the campus directly.

    Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

You will generally need the following:

    • Certified copy of your ID
    • Certified copy of your latest school results (Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12)
    • Proof of residence
    • Email address and phone number
    • For online applications: scanned copies of documents

Step 3: Apply Online or In-Person

Most TVET colleges have online application portals. However, walk-in applications are also available during registration periods. Make sure to apply before the deadline—applications usually open in August or September for the following academic year.

Step 4: Take a Placement Test

Many colleges require a placement test to determine your academic level and best-fit programme. This is not an entrance exam, but a support tool.

Step 5: Await Feedback and Register

Once accepted, you’ll receive an admission letter. Follow the registration instructions and submit your documents at the registration office or online. You may also apply for NSFAS funding at this stage if you meet the criteria.

NSFAS Funding for TVET College Students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides funding for tuition, accommodation, transport, and learning materials for eligible students at public TVET colleges. Applications are done online at www.nsfas.org.za and typically open from September to January.

TVET colleges in Gauteng offer a powerful alternative to university, focusing on skill-based training that meets the needs of employers. With a wide variety of affordable programmes, multiple campuses, and access to funding, they provide practical pathways for students to enter the workforce confidently.
