Distance learning is an increasingly popular choice for South African students who need a flexible way to study. Whether due to work commitments, family responsibilities, or living in remote areas, many students opt for distance education. If you’re considering this route, one big question might be: Can distance learning students get NSFAS funding?

NSFAS for Distance Learning Students: What You Need to Know

Here’s everything you need to know.

    What is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-funded initiative that provides financial assistance to eligible South African students who want to pursue higher education at public universities or TVET colleges. NSFAS covers tuition fees, registration, allowances for books, accommodation, transport, and personal care, depending on the student’s needs and mode of study.

    Does NSFAS Fund Distance Learning?

Yes, NSFAS does fund distance learning students, but there are a few important conditions and limitations.

Distance learning is supported only at public institutions that are NSFAS-accredited. These include universities such as Unisa (University of South Africa), which is the most popular distance learning institution in the country.

However, the level of funding for distance learning students is not the same as that for full-time, contact students. Because distance learning typically doesn’t require accommodation, transport, or meals on campus, NSFAS provides a limited allowance compared to what contact students receive.

NSFAS Allowances for Distance Learning Students

The NSFAS allowance for distance learners is mainly meant to assist with learning materials and, in some cases, a small incidental or personal care allowance.

As of 2025, the NSFAS funding structure for distance learning students is as follows:

    • Tuition fees: Covered in full, as charged by the university.
    • Learning material allowance: Students may receive up to R5,460 per year for books and study materials.
    • Personal care allowance: In some cases, a R3,045 annual allowance may be provided for incidental expenses.
    • No transport, accommodation, or meal allowances are given, as distance learners are not physically attending campus.

To qualify for these allowances, a student must be registered for at least 60 course credits in an academic year. If you’re only studying part-time or taking fewer modules, you may not qualify for the allowances.

    Who Qualifies?

To qualify as a distance learning student, you must meet the following criteria:

    • Be a South African citizen.
    • Be registered or planning to register at a public institution offering distance learning.
    • Come from a household with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less.
    • Pass the academic eligibility requirements of the institution.
    • Not be receiving funding from another bursary that covers the same expenses.

    How to Apply

Applications for NSFAS are done online via the NSFAS portal (www.nsfas.org.za). The process is the same for both contact and distance learning students. You will need:

    • A copy of your South African ID or birth certificate.
    • Proof of income or affidavit if unemployed.
    • Your academic records or proof of registration.
    • Consent forms signed by your parents or guardians (if under 18 or dependent).

It’s important to apply before the closing deadline, which usually falls towards the end of the year (typically around November or December for the following academic year).

Additional Tips for Distance Learning Applicants

    1. Choose the right institution: Make sure the university you’re applying to is NSFAS-accredited and offers approved qualifications through distance learning.
    2. Register for sufficient credits: If you want to qualify for the full benefit of NSFAS funding, ensure you’re taking enough modules to meet the credit requirements.
    3. Check your status: After applying, regularly log in to the NSFAS portal to track your application and funding status.

NSFAS does support distance learning students, but with some limitations compared to contact students. If you plan your studies well, meet the credit requirements, and attend a public institution like UNISA, NSFAS can help make your distance education more affordable. Always stay informed of deadlines and requirements to ensure a smooth funding application process.
