If you’re a qualified educator or education professional looking to advance your career, the Master of Education (MEd) programme at the University of the Free State (UFS) offers a world-class opportunity to do just that. UFS is a reputable South African institution known for academic excellence, and the Faculty of Education continues to deliver programmes that address current educational challenges, research needs, and policy development. The Master of Education degree is designed for professionals who are ready to contribute meaningfully to the field of education, both locally and globally.

Master of Education at UFS – Apply Before 30 Sept!

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand the MEd programme at UFS and how to apply before the 30 September deadline.

    Programme Overview

The Master of Education degree at UFS is a research-based postgraduate qualification, meaning that students will focus on conducting in-depth research on a specialised topic within the field of education. This qualification is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing careers in education leadership, policy-making, curriculum development, or academic research.

Students are expected to register for a research proposal in the first year of study and then proceed with their dissertation. There is no coursework component in this programme, making it different from taught master’s degrees. The MEd programme allows students to work closely with a supervisor and engage in independent study that contributes new knowledge to the education sector.

    Specialisation Fields

Applicants can choose to specialise in one of the following fields (depending on availability and supervisor capacity):

    • Curriculum Studies
    • Education Management and Leadership
    • Higher Education Studies
    • Psychology of Education
    • Philosophy and Policy Studies in Education
    • Inclusive Education
    • ICT in Education
    • Early Childhood Education

Each specialisation requires a focused research project, and applicants should ensure their proposed topic aligns with one of these areas.

    Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission, applicants must:

    • Hold an approved Bachelor of Education Honours (BEdHons) degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 8).
    • Have achieved a minimum average of 60% in their previous postgraduate studies.
    • Submit a research concept note or proposal as part of the application process.
    • Be able to demonstrate academic writing proficiency.

Some departments may require an interview or additional documentation to assess your research readiness and alignment with available supervisors.

    Duration and Study Options

The MEd at UFS is typically completed in two years of part-time study, though students may take longer depending on their progress and research scope. Full-time study options may also be available for those able to commit more time to their research.

The programme is available on the Bloemfontein Campus and is open to both South African and international students.

    Application Process

Applications for the 2026 academic year close on 30 September 2025. Interested candidates should apply well in advance to avoid last-minute issues. Here’s how to apply:

    1. Visit the UFS online application portal: https://apply.ufs.ac.za
    2. Register and complete the application form, selecting the Master of Education programme and preferred specialisation.
    3. Upload all required documents, including:
      • Academic transcripts and certificates
      • Research proposal or concept note
      • ID or passport
      • Proof of payment of the application fee
    4. Monitor your email for updates regarding your application status and possible interview invitations.
