If you’re interested in studying Public Relations (PR) and Communication in South Africa, understanding the Admission Point Score (APS) is an important first step. The APS score determines whether you meet the basic entry requirements for a qualification at a university or university of technology.

APS Score for Public Relations & Communication

In this guide, we’ll break down what the APS score is, how it’s calculated, and what scores are typically required to study Public Relations and Communication at different institutions.

    What is an APS Score?

The APS score is a points system used by South African universities to assess whether prospective students qualify for a specific programme. Each subject in your final National Senior Certificate (NSC) results earns a score from 1 to 7, based on the percentage achieved. Here’s a quick look at how points are awarded:

    PercentageAPS Score
    80–100%7
    70–79%6
    60–69%5
    50–59%4
    40–49%3
    30–39%2
    0–29%1

Most universities calculate your APS based on your best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation (LO), although this can vary depending on the institution.

Typical APS Requirements for Public Relations & Communication

APS requirements vary depending on the level of study (diploma vs. degree) and the institution. Here’s a breakdown of general entry requirements for popular PR and Communication qualifications:

    1. Diploma in Public Relations or Communication

    • APS Score Needed: Minimum of 22–24 points.
    • Subjects Required:
      • English (Home Language or First Additional Language): At least level 4 (50–59%).
      • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy may be required depending on the institution.

    Institutions Offering Diplomas:

    • Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) – APS of 22 with English at level 4.
    • Durban University of Technology (DUT) – APS of 24, with English and additional languages taken into account.
    • Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) – APS of 24, with English at level 4.

    2. Bachelor’s Degree in Communication or Strategic Communication

    • APS Score Needed: Minimum of 28–33 points.
    • Subjects Required:
      • English: Level 5 or above (60–69%).
      • Additional Language: Often required at level 4 or above.
      • Mathematics may be required for certain BA programmes, but not always.

    Institutions Offering Degrees:

    • University of Johannesburg (UJ) – APS of 28–30 for BA in Strategic Communication. English at level 5 is mandatory.
    • University of South Africa (UNISA) – Offers BA degrees in Communication Science. APS around 25–27 depending on modules chosen.
    • North-West University (NWU) – APS of 30–32 for BA in Communication Studies.

How to Calculate Your APS for PR and Communication

Here’s an example of how to calculate your APS:

    SubjectPercentageAPS
    English HL68%5
    Afrikaans FAL70%6
    Mathematics Literacy65%5
    Life Sciences62%5
    History75%6
    Business Studies60%5
    Life Orientation (excluded)70%–
    Total APS32

With an APS of 32, this student would likely qualify for most degree programmes in Public Relations or Communication.

    Tips for Meeting APS Requirements

    • Focus on Languages: Since communication programmes heavily rely on language skills, performing well in English is crucial.
    • Improve Weak Subjects: If you’re short a few points, consider upgrading your Matric results through a second exam or bridging course.
    • Apply to Multiple Institutions: Requirements differ, so broaden your chances by applying to more than one university or college.

Understanding the APS score and entry requirements ensures you’re on the right track from the start. Always check the official website of your preferred institution for the most up-to-date information. With the right preparation, you can secure your place in a programme that aligns with your passion and career goals.
