Choosing a Business Management course is a significant step toward a career in finance, entrepreneurship, or corporate leadership. However, gaining admission to these programs requires meeting specific APS (Admission Point Score) criteria.

APS Score for Business Management Courses

This guide explains what an APS score is, how it is calculated, and the minimum APS requirements for different Business Management courses in South Africa. Whether you’re aiming for a higher certificate, diploma, or degree, understanding these requirements will help you make informed decisions about your education and future career.

    What is an APS Score?

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a system used by South African universities and colleges to determine whether a student qualifies for a specific course. Each subject taken in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam is assigned a score based on the achieved percentage, and these scores are added to form the APS.

    How is the APS Calculated?

The APS is calculated by assigning points to your matric subjects based on your percentage score. Most universities use the following point system:

    NSC PercentageAPS Points
    80 – 100%7
    70 – 79%6
    60 – 69%5
    50 – 59%4
    40 – 49%3
    30 – 39%2
    0 – 29%1

Typically, universities consider the APS based on the best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation.

APS Requirements for Business Management Courses

The APS required for a Business Management course varies depending on the institution and the level of qualification (certificate, diploma, or degree). Below is a general guideline:

    1. Higher Certificate in Business Management

    • APS Requirement: 15 – 18
    • Typical Subjects Required: English, Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy
    • Institutions Offering: TVET Colleges, private colleges, and some universities of technology

    2. Diploma in Business Management

    • APS Requirement: 19 – 24
    • Typical Subjects Required: English, Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy, and Business Studies (recommended but not compulsory)
    • Institutions Offering: Universities of technology such as Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Durban University of Technology (DUT)

    3. Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management

    • APS Requirement: 26 – 30
    • Typical Subjects Required: English, Mathematics (some universities accept Mathematical Literacy but require a higher APS), Economics or Business Studies (recommended)
    • Institutions Offering: Traditional universities such as the University of Pretoria (UP), University of Cape Town (UCT), and Stellenbosch University

    University-Specific APS Requirements

Each university has its own APS requirement. Here are some examples:

    • University of Johannesburg (UJ): Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management requires an APS of 26, with Mathematics at level 4 (50-59%).
    • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits): Bachelor of Commerce requires an APS of at least 30 with Mathematics at level 5 (60-69%).
    • University of South Africa (UNISA): Requires a minimum APS of 21 for a Bachelor’s in Business Management.

    Alternative Entry Routes

If you do not meet the required APS for your preferred business management course, there are alternative options:

    1. Bridging Courses: Some universities offer foundation or bridging programs that allow students to improve their qualifications before entering a full degree program.
    2. TVET College Pathway: Students can start with a business-related course at a TVET college and later apply for admission into a degree program at a university.
    3. Mature Age Exemption: Some institutions provide access to applicants over the age of 23 who have relevant work experience.

Your APS score plays a crucial role in determining your eligibility for a Business Management course. It is essential to check the specific entry requirements of the institution you are interested in and explore alternative routes if needed. Understanding APS requirements in advance can help you plan your subject choices wisely and increase your chances of admission.
