The aviation industry is one of the most dynamic and ever-evolving fields in the world, offering a range of career opportunities for individuals who are passionate about flying and air traffic management. One such exciting opportunity is the Air Traffic Services (ATS) Bursary Program, offered by Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS). This program aims to equip South African youth with the necessary skills and qualifications to pursue a career in the aviation industry.

What is the Air Traffic Services Bursary Program?

Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) is offering 117 bursary opportunities to individuals interested in pursuing a career in air traffic services. This bursary program is designed for South African youth who are eager to receive training in air traffic management. The program provides candidates with the chance to attend the Aviation Training Academy in Bonaero Park, Gauteng, and receive comprehensive training in the field of aviation.

The Air Traffic Services Bursary Program consists of four intake sessions throughout the financial year, offering a variety of bursary streams. These streams include various roles in air traffic services and management, including:

    1. Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)
    2. Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO)
    3. Target Generating Officer (TGO)
    4. Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer
    5. Simulator Support Officer (SSO)

The selected bursars will undergo an extensive training program, gaining exposure to a variety of air traffic management aspects, and will have opportunities to be placed in positions that align with the operational needs of ATNS.

    Bursary Streams and Job Roles

Each bursary stream offers candidates the chance to specialize in different aspects of air traffic services. Here’s an overview of the available streams:

    1. Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)

As an ATSO, you will be trained to manage air traffic in controlled airspace, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft. This role is vital in maintaining aviation safety standards, and you will be involved in tasks such as issuing clearances, controlling traffic flow, and managing potential conflicts between aircraft.

    2. Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO)

AIMOs are responsible for the management and dissemination of aeronautical information. This includes managing flight plans, airspace restrictions, and providing critical information to pilots and air traffic controllers. AIMOs ensure that all stakeholders are informed about the latest flight details and changes in air traffic operations.

    3. Target Generating Officer (TGO)

TGOs play a crucial role in the identification and tracking of potential targets (aircraft or drones) in airspace. They gather and analyze radar data and other information to support air traffic operations. This role is key to ensuring safe separation of aircraft and avoiding potential mid-air collisions.

    4. Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer

The AMC Liaison Officer works closely with airport management teams to ensure that all operations, such as aircraft arrivals and departures, are smooth and efficient. They act as a liaison between air traffic controllers and airport officials, helping coordinate activities across various departments.

    5. Simulator Support Officer (SSO)

Simulator Support Officers are responsible for maintaining and operating flight simulators used for air traffic training. They ensure that these systems are functioning properly and are ready for training sessions. This role is critical to the effective training of air traffic controllers, pilots, and other aviation professionals.

Minimum Requirements for the ATS Bursary Program

To be eligible for the Air Traffic Services Bursary Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
