The University of Johannesburg has taken a bold step into the future of learning with the launch of UJ Digital, a cutting-edge online education platform designed to make high-quality education more accessible, flexible, and industry-relevant across Africa and beyond.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in UJ’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity in higher education.
A Strategic Vision for the Future
UJ Digital is a central component of the university’s 2035 Strategic Plan, which focuses on future-readiness, global competitiveness, and transformative learning. As demand for online learning continues to grow globally, the university is positioning itself at the forefront of this trend by offering digital programmes that meet the needs of a modern, diverse student body.
The platform offers a wide range of Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) and non-subsidised Whole Programmes (WPs). These are specifically tailored to equip learners with in-demand skills in fields such as communications, business, engineering, health, information technology, law, and languages. These programmes are designed not only to enhance employability but also to address South Africa’s and Africa’s broader skills shortages.
Free Learning Opportunities
One of the standout features of UJ Digital is its free-to-the-public online SLPs. These courses cover key topics such as workplace readiness, financial literacy, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and artificial intelligence. By making these resources available at no cost, the university is promoting inclusive access to education for people from all walks of life—whether they are employed professionals, job seekers, or lifelong learners.
This initiative is particularly important in South Africa, where the percentage of the population with university degrees remains low. UJ Digital presents an opportunity to close that gap by removing traditional barriers to entry, such as location, cost, and time.
A Memorable Launch
The official launch event of UJ Digital was held on 21 May 2025 at the Sanlam Auditorium. It was a spectacular and symbolic celebration of digital transformation. The event featured a performance by the award-winning UJ Choir, and a violinist dressed in an LED-lit dress flashing the words “UJ Digital.” Audience members were given flashing wristbands to wear, creating an immersive and visually engaging experience that echoed the interactive nature of online learning itself.
During the launch, the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, highlighted the importance of the platform. He described UJ Digital as a powerful tool for creating inclusive, flexible learning opportunities that not only respond to the evolving demands of industries but also empower students to thrive in a digitally connected world.

Driving the Digital Education Agenda in Africa
UJ Digital is also a step toward expanding UJ’s influence and reach beyond South Africa. As the global market for online education is expected to grow substantially by 2035, the university aims to become a key player not just nationally but internationally. The university is embracing sustainable technology, flexible delivery models, and a learner-centric approach to make this vision a reality.
Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UJ Chancellor and former Deputy President of South Africa, underscored the need to “reimagine universities.” She pointed out that fewer than 10% of South Africans have university degrees and stressed the importance of making education available anytime, anywhere.
A New Chapter in Learning
UJ Digital is more than just a platform—it’s a gateway to a new way of learning that aligns with the future of work. By offering relevant, affordable, and accessible education, the university is helping individuals across Africa to upskill, reskill, and unlock new career opportunities.
In a world increasingly shaped by technology, UJ’s investment in digital education is a transformative move that sets a new standard for higher learning institutions. With UJ Digital, the university is not only enhancing its academic offerings but also contributing meaningfully to the social and economic development of the continent.
