Writing an exam essay can feel intimidating—especially if English isn’t your strongest subject. However, with the right approach and structure, anyone can craft a clear, focused essay that earns marks.

How to Write a Winning Exam Essay

Here’s how to prepare, plan, and write a winning exam essay, even if you find English challenging.

    1. Understand the Question

Before you write anything, carefully read the essay question. Underline key instruction words like “discuss,” “compare,” “evaluate,” or “explain.” These words tell you what kind of answer is expected. Also, highlight the main topic of the question so you don’t drift off-topic.

Tip: Rephrase the question in your own words. This helps you make sure you understand it before you begin writing.

    2. Make a Quick Plan

Planning helps you organize your thoughts and stay focused. You don’t need a long, detailed plan—just jot down:

    • Your main argument or opinion (your thesis)
    • Two to three main points that support your argument
    • Examples or evidence for each point

This outline is your essay’s roadmap. It prevents confusion and saves time when writing.

    Example:
If the question is: “Do you agree that technology has improved education?”, your plan might look like this:

    • Introduction: Yes, it has.
    • Point 1: Online learning – gives access to more people
    • Point 2: Interactive tools – help students understand better
    • Point 3: Teachers use tech to save time and track progress
    • Conclusion: Technology brings major improvements

    3. Use a Clear Essay Structure

No matter the topic, a good exam essay follows this basic structure:

    Introduction

    • Start with a short sentence that introduces the topic.
    • Clearly state your main opinion or thesis.
    • Briefly list the points you will discuss.

    Example:
“Technology has had a big impact on education. I believe it has improved learning in many ways. This essay will look at online access, digital learning tools, and how teachers benefit from technology.”

    Body Paragraphs (Usually 2–3)

Each paragraph should focus on one main point. Use this format:

    • Topic sentence: Introduces the main point.
    • Explanation: Describe the point further.
    • Example or evidence: Give a real or imagined example.

    Example:
“One major benefit of technology in education is online learning. Students in remote areas can now attend classes through the internet. For example, many South African learners used online platforms during the COVID-19 lockdown to continue their studies.”

    Conclusion

    • Summarize your main points.
    • Restate your opinion in a new way.
    • Don’t add new information.

    Example:
“In conclusion, technology has clearly improved education. With online classes, digital tools, and better support for teachers, it helps students learn more effectively.”

    4. Keep Your Language Simple and Correct

You don’t need big words to write a great essay. Use short sentences and familiar vocabulary. Focus on:

    • Correct grammar – especially subject-verb agreement and tenses
    • Basic punctuation – full stops, commas, and capital letters
    • Linking words – such as firstly, however, for example, in conclusion to connect your ideas

    5. Manage Your Time

In an exam, time is limited. Use your time wisely:

    • 5–10 minutes to understand the question and plan
    • 20–25 minutes to write the essay
    • 5 minutes to check for mistakes

If you don’t have time to finish, write a quick conclusion or bullet points showing what you would have said. This can still earn you partial marks.

    6. Practice Before the Exam

Practice writing essays before the real exam. Use past papers or sample questions. After writing, check your work or ask someone to give feedback. The more you practice, the more confident and clear your writing will become.

Even if English isn’t your best subject, you can still write a strong exam essay by keeping your ideas simple, staying organised, and following a clear structure. Focus on answering the question, giving examples, and using clear language. With practice and good planning, you can impress your markers and improve your grades.
