Applying to university is one of the most exciting steps in a student’s academic journey. Whether you’re a high school matriculant or someone returning to studies, preparing early can make all the difference.

University Application Checklist for 2026: What You Need to Know

Here’s your ultimate checklist for applying to university in 2026 in South Africa.

    1. Start with Research (Early 2025)

Before applying, do thorough research to find the best university and course for you. Consider:

    • Institution reputation: Look at public universities, private institutions, and TVET colleges depending on your goals.
    • Course content: Read the full curriculum to ensure it matches your interests and career plans.
    • Accreditation: Ensure the institution and course are accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and SAQA.

Popular universities to explore include the University of Cape Town (UCT), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Stellenbosch University, and University of Pretoria.

    2. Know the Application Opening and Closing Dates

Most South African universities open their applications around April to June and close them between August and October. Each institution has different deadlines depending on the programme.

Pro tip: Apply early—programmes like medicine, law, and engineering often close sooner than others due to high demand.

    3. Prepare Your Academic Documents

You’ll need the following documents when applying:

    • Certified copy of your ID or passport
    • Certified copy of your latest school results (Grade 11 final report or June/September Grade 12 results)
    • Final NSC (matric) certificate if you’ve already matriculated
    • Proof of residence
    • Passport photo (if required)

Always certify your documents at the police station or a post office. Documents should be certified within the last three months.

    4. Write a Motivational or Personal Statement (If Required)

Some universities and programmes ask for a motivational letter or personal statement, especially for competitive fields like teaching, journalism, and the arts. Your letter should explain:

    • Why you want to study the course
    • Your future goals
    • Any relevant experience or achievements

    5. Register for the NBTs (National Benchmark Tests)

Certain universities and courses require NBTs for admission. These tests assess academic readiness for university and usually include:

    • Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL)
    • Mathematics (MAT) – for applicants in mathematically-based fields

NBTs can be written online or at test centres across the country. Registration typically opens in March or April, and it’s best to write them before the end of September.

    6. Apply Online Through University Portals or Centralised Systems

Universities have online portals for application. Some provinces also use a centralised platform like CAO (Central Applications Office) for KwaZulu-Natal-based institutions.

    When applying:

    • Pay the application fee (if required)
    • Upload all documents in the correct format
    • Track your application status after submission

    7. Apply for Financial Aid or Scholarships

Don’t forget to apply for funding:

    • NSFAS: For students from households earning less than R350,000 annually
    • University bursaries: Offered based on academic merit or financial need
    • Private bursaries and scholarships: Offered by companies, NGOs, and government departments

Make sure to apply early, especially for NSFAS, which opens its applications between September and January.

    8. Apply for Student Accommodation (Optional but Important)

If you’ll need accommodation, apply through the university’s residence portal. Space is limited, and first-come, first-served rules often apply.

You can also consider private student housing options near the campus.

    9. Save Your Application Login and Confirmation Details

After applying, you’ll receive a student number or reference code. Keep it safe! You’ll use it to:

    • Log in to the portal
    • Check your application status
    • Upload documents
    • Accept offers later on

    10. Stay Updated and Respond to Offers

Universities begin responding to applications between November 2025 and January 2026, depending on when your matric results are released.

    • Upload final matric results as soon as they are released.
    • Regularly check your application portal and email.
    • Accept or decline offers within the given timeframe.

By researching your options, preparing your documents, meeting deadlines, and applying for funding and accommodation, you’ll be well on your way to securing a spot at your dream institution. Use this checklist as your guide through each stage of the application process, and remember—being informed and organised is the key to a smooth and successful journey into higher education.
