The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) is a prominent South African university located in KwaZulu-Natal. It offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across its two campuses—KwaDlangezwa, the main campus, and the Richards Bay campus, which focuses on career-oriented and technical programs.

University of Zululand Applications for 2026

If you’re planning to apply for the 2026 academic year, this guide will walk you through the application process, deadlines, and key admission requirements.

    Application Opening and Deadline Dates

Applications for 2026 open on 1 March 2025. The University of Zululand processes undergraduate applications through the Central Applications Office (CAO). The CAO is a centralized application system used by several universities and colleges in KwaZulu-Natal.

The closing date for most undergraduate programs is 30 September 2025, but applicants are strongly encouraged to apply well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues. Late applications may be considered for some programs, but acceptance is not guaranteed and may depend on space availability.

    Who Should Apply?

You should apply to UNIZULU if you:

    • Are currently in Grade 12 and want to start university in 2026.
    • Have completed matric and want to pursue further studies.
    • Want to change institutions and continue your studies at UNIZULU.
    • Are applying for a second qualification (such as a postgraduate diploma or degree).
    • Are an international student wishing to study in South Africa.

    How to Apply to UNIZULU

    Step 1: Apply via CAO

All undergraduate applicants must apply through the Central Applications Office. You can do this online or by completing a paper application form. Here’s a summary of what you’ll need:

    • A valid South African ID or passport (for international applicants).
    • Your latest academic results (Grade 11 final and Grade 12 June results if still in school).
    • A working cellphone number and email address.
    • Proof of payment for the application fee.

The CAO institution code for UNIZULU is ZU.

Step 2: Pay the Application Fee

The application fee is non-refundable. It’s important to keep the receipt or proof of payment as it may be requested during the process.

    Step 3: Monitor Your Application

Once your application is submitted, you’ll receive a reference number. Use this to track the progress of your application on the CAO website. UNIZULU may contact you for additional documents or information.

    Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary depending on the program, but the general criteria include:

    • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a degree or diploma endorsement.
    • Meeting the specific Admission Point Score (APS) for the chosen program.
    • Meeting subject-specific requirements (e.g., Mathematics or Physical Science for Science-related degrees).
    • International students must have their qualifications evaluated by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority).

It’s important to check the detailed admission requirements for your program of interest before applying.

    Faculties and Programs Offered

UNIZULU offers a wide range of academic programs through its faculties:

    1. Faculty of Education
    2. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
    3. Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering
    4. Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law

Each faculty has specific programs, and applicants should explore these in detail to find the best fit for their career goals.

    Postgraduate Applications

Postgraduate applications are handled directly through the university and not via CAO. You can download the relevant application forms from the university’s official website or contact the admissions office for assistance. A certified copy of your previous qualification, academic transcripts, and a research proposal (for research-based degrees) may be required.

    Final Tips for Applicants

    • Apply early to increase your chances of acceptance.
    • Make sure your documents are certified and legible.
    • Check your SMS and email regularly for updates from UNIZULU or the CAO.
    • Visit the university’s website or contact their admissions office for updates or questions.

The University of Zululand provides excellent opportunities for students to grow academically and professionally. By staying informed and applying on time, you take the first step toward a successful and fulfilling academic journey in 2026.
