Stellenbosch University’s MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) program is one of the most competitive medical degrees in South Africa. Unlike many universities that use an Admission Point Score (APS) system, Stellenbosch University applies a holistic selection process, taking multiple factors into account.

This guide provides detailed information on the admission requirements, selection criteria, and important considerations for prospective students.

    1. Understanding Stellenbosch University’s Admission Criteria for Medicine

Since the university does not use an APS-based system, candidates must meet specific academic, assessment, and selection criteria to be considered for admission.

    Minimum Academic Requirements

Applicants must achieve the following minimum subject requirements in their National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent qualification:

    SubjectMinimum Required Score
    MathematicsLevel 6 (70%)
    Physical SciencesLevel 6 (70%)
    Life SciencesLevel 6 (70%)
    Overall AggregateAt least 70%

    Additional Requirements:

    • The university recommends that applicants be proficient in both Afrikaans and English since the MBChB program is presented bilingually.
    • A strong academic background in science-related subjects is necessary due to the nature of medical studies.

    National Benchmark Tests (NBTs)

The NBTs are a compulsory part of the selection process and assess a student’s academic readiness for higher education. The NBTs include:

    • Academic Literacy (AL) – Measures language comprehension and reasoning skills.
    • Quantitative Literacy (QL) – Tests numerical problem-solving abilities.
    • Mathematics (MAT) – Assesses higher-level mathematical proficiency.

The university considers both school results and NBT performance to evaluate an applicant’s ability to handle the demands of medical school.

    2. Selection Process: How Candidates Are Chosen

The MBChB program is highly competitive, with only 235 students selected each year. Since more applicants qualify than available spots, Stellenbosch University follows a weighted selection system to ensure fairness and diversity.

    Selection Weighting Criteria

    Selection ComponentWeight
    Academic Performance (NSC or equivalent)45%
    NBT Results30%
    Non-Academic Performance & Background Factors25%

    Additional Considerations:

    • Personal Motivation and Background: Stellenbosch University aims to admit students from diverse backgrounds, including those from disadvantaged communities.
    • Previous Tertiary Education: If an applicant has studied a related degree (such as Biomedical Sciences), their university marks may be considered.
    • Situational Judgement Test (SJT): This test evaluates ethical decision-making and problem-solving, essential for medical professionals.

    3. Different Application Categories

Applicants for the MBChB program fall into different selection categories based on their background:

Category 1: School Leavers (Matric Students & Recent NSC Graduates)

    • Applicants who are currently in Grade 12 or completed school within the past three years fall into this category.
    • Selections take place during the second semester of the preceding year (before university starts).
    • Final selection is based on NSC results, NBT performance, and school performance trends.

    Category 2: Stellenbosch University Students

    • Current Stellenbosch University students studying a relevant degree (such as BSc in Human Physiology or Health Sciences) may apply for internal transfers into the MBChB program.
    • Selection is based on university marks and performance in previous courses.

Category 3: Applicants with Previous Tertiary Education

    • Students with a prior university qualification (e.g., a BSc in a science-related field) may be considered.
    • This group may need to repeat certain first-year subjects before fully integrating into the MBChB program.

    How to Apply

    1. Online Application:
      • Applications must be submitted via the Stellenbosch University online portal before the deadline.
    2. Submission of Supporting Documents:
      • Certified copies of NSC results or latest school reports.
      • NBT scores (submitted directly by the testing body).
      • Personal information forms and, where required, motivation letters.
    3. Selection and Offers:
      • Provisional offers are made based on Grade 11 results.
      • Final admission is confirmed once Matric results are released.
    4. Registration & Orientation:
      • Successful candidates complete registration and begin studies in January.

    5. Important Considerations for Applicants

    • Competition is High: Simply meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. A strong academic record is crucial.
    • Early Preparation is Key: Start preparing for NBTs well in advance to ensure a high score.
    • Bilingual Proficiency Helps: Although English is commonly used, some subjects are also taught in Afrikaans.
    • Alternative Pathways Exist: Students who are not accepted may consider studying a related field (like BSc in Human Biology) and reapplying.

    6. Alternative Routes to Medicine

If you do not get accepted into Stellenbosch University’s MBChB program immediately, you may consider:

    • Studying a Health Science Degree First – Completing a BSc in Medical or Biological Sciences and then reapplying.
    • Applying to Other Medical Schools – Consider UCT, Wits, UKZN, or UP, which have different selection criteria.
    • Trying a Postgraduate Entry Route – Some universities offer graduate-entry medical programs for students with science degrees.

Gaining admission to Stellenbosch University’s MBChB program requires strong academic performance, excellent NBT results, and strategic preparation. Since Stellenbosch does not use APS scores, applicants should focus on achieving top marks in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences while also performing well in the NBTs.

Students should plan ahead, apply early, and explore alternative routes if needed. With dedication and the right approach, achieving your dream of studying medicine at Stellenbosch University is possible.
