The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are a crucial part of university admissions in South Africa. These tests assess academic readiness for tertiary education and are used by many institutions alongside National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. Preparing for the NBTs requires a structured study plan to ensure success.

Below is a complete guide to help you prepare effectively for the NBTs in 2025.

    1. Understanding the NBTs

The NBTs consist of two tests:

    • Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL): Tests comprehension, language skills, and basic quantitative reasoning.
    • Mathematics (MAT): Assesses mathematical concepts for students applying to courses that require mathematics.

Each university may have different requirements regarding the NBTs, so check with your chosen institution to determine which test(s) you need to take.

The tests are multiple-choice and are designed to be challenging. The AQL test is written by all students, while the MAT test is required for those pursuing math-intensive courses such as engineering, commerce, and science.

    2. Setting Up a Study Schedule

A well-structured study plan will help you cover all topics systematically. Here’s a recommended timeline:

    • 8 Weeks Before the Test:
      • Familiarize yourself with the test format.
      • Take a diagnostic test to assess strengths and weaknesses.
      • Gather study materials (past papers, textbooks, online resources).
      • Create a study timetable to allocate time for each section.
    • 6–7 Weeks Before the Test:
      • Focus on core concepts in literacy and mathematics.
      • Develop a reading habit to improve comprehension skills.
      • Revise basic mathematical formulas and problem-solving techniques.
      • Engage in daily vocabulary-building exercises to enhance literacy skills.
    • 4–5 Weeks Before the Test:
      • Practice time management by solving full-length practice tests.
      • Review incorrect answers to understand mistakes.
      • Strengthen weak areas through additional exercises.
      • Begin practicing under timed conditions to simulate real test scenarios.
    • 2–3 Weeks Before the Test:
      • Continue practicing under timed conditions.
      • Work on past NBT papers and simulated exams.
      • Focus on improving accuracy and speed.
      • Take notes on frequently made mistakes and revise those topics.
    • 1 Week Before the Test:
      • Reduce study time and focus on revision.
      • Get enough rest and stay relaxed.
      • Review key concepts and avoid learning new topics.
      • Take a final full-length practice test to assess readiness.
    • Test Day Preparation:
      • Ensure you have your ID, test confirmation, and stationery.
      • Arrive early at the test center.
      • Stay calm and apply test-taking strategies effectively.
      • Read all instructions carefully before answering questions.

    3. Study Materials and Resources

    • Past NBT Papers: Available on official sites and educational platforms.
    • Mathematics Study Guides: Use NSC-aligned books for review.
    • Online Resources: Platforms like Khan Academy and Siyavula offer free study materials.
    • Group Study: Join study groups or NBT preparation workshops for peer learning.
    • Tutoring Services: Consider hiring a tutor for personalized guidance if necessary.
    • Educational Apps: Utilize apps such as Quizlet for vocabulary practice and Photomath for solving math problems.

    4. Test-Taking Strategies

    • Time Management: Allocate time wisely for each section.
    • Eliminate Wrong Answers: Use logical reasoning to rule out incorrect choices.
    • Read Carefully: Ensure understanding of questions before answering.
    • Stay Positive: Confidence plays a crucial role in performance.
    • Use the Process of Elimination: If unsure, eliminate obvious incorrect options to increase your chances of selecting the correct answer.
    • Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing to stay focused.

    5. Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

    • Running Out of Time: Practice under timed conditions regularly to improve speed.
    • Difficulty Understanding Questions: Read widely and practice comprehension exercises to enhance reading skills.
    • Mathematical Struggles: Focus on weak areas by solving additional problems and seeking help when needed.
    • Test Anxiety: Simulate test conditions to build confidence and reduce stress.

Preparing for the NBTs requires dedication, strategic planning, and consistent practice. By understanding the test format, following a structured study plan, using reliable resources, and applying effective test-taking strategies, you can significantly improve your chances of success. Remember to pace yourself, stay positive, and manage stress effectively. The key to performing well is preparation and confidence—trust in the effort you’ve put in.
