Amapiano Dance Championship- Winners Walk Away With A R50k Grand Prize
The Amapiano Dance Championship is heading to Johannesburg from 31 October to 2 November 2024, giving young dancers an exciting opportunity to win a R50k grand prize. Organized by Elvis Sibeko Studios and hosted at the Joburg Theatre, the event offers more than just a platform for competition—participants will also attend workshops to develop skills in choreography, showbiz, and marketing.
Amapiano is a South African music genre blending deep house, jazz, and lounge sounds, often characterized by its piano melodies, smooth basslines, and catchy beats. Since emerging in the early 2010s, it has taken over the local and international music scenes. Initially rooted in Gauteng townships, Amapiano’s rise has been powered by viral social media videos, dance challenges, and club performances.
The genre’s popularity exploded thanks to online platforms and artists like Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, and Focalistic, who fused Amapiano with other African rhythms. Its smooth but energetic beats have made it the soundtrack to South African nightlife, with many songs becoming viral anthems. Amapiano has expanded beyond music, inspiring a distinct fashion and dance culture that resonates with youth across Africa.
After a successful event in Cape Town, the competition will visit multiple cities, including Durban, Bloemfontein, and Gqeberha, aiming to provide young dancers with more exposure. Participants can compete in Soloist, Duo/Trio, and Group categories, showcasing talent not just for entertainment but as a path to sustainable careers.
Elvis Sibeko emphasizes that the championship aims to uplift young people from underserved communities. Apart from the dance competition, the event will feature R25,000 worth of workshops focused on choreography, sound engineering, and business skills like contract negotiation and brand collaborations. The goal is to equip dancers with the tools to succeed as professionals in the entertainment industry.
With registrations closing on 25 October, the Johannesburg edition promises to be a vibrant celebration of dance, talent, and community. Whether a dancer or a fan, this event offers a chance to engage with the vibrant Amapiano movement and its creative culture.
