A full update on the Nasi iSpani initiative has been shared by the Gauteng Provincial Government. These recent months have been a busy yet exciting time in the province, with the drive to ensure that many unemployed South Africans receive the dignified opportunity of earning a stipend and lifting themselves out of poverty.

    Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced this week that the administrative tasks of capturing all the applications have been completed. And in just a few short days (the 20th of August), the province’s governmental departments will be shortlisting candidates and conducting public interviews.

    The Nasi iSpani Campaign Has Received More Than 1,5 Million Applications  

    A snapshot of the campaign’s progress shows that the total number of applications received by the government was over 1,5 million by July 2023. 98.8% of the applicants were African. And the highest number (40.6%) of applicants were from outside of Gauteng; followed by those from the City of Tswhane (17.08%), the City of Johannesburg (16.5%), and Ekurhuleni (15.6%).

    The 15 vacancies that attracted the most applications had 6,044 posts between them. These received a stunning 234,134 applicants.

    Nine of the fifteen top vacancies were for clerk roles, and the others were made up of cleaner/general worker posts. The Department of Roads and Transport offered 6,000 jobs for Pothole Patching/Grass Cutting/EPWP Pointsman and received the most applications of all the departments at a count of 27,837.

    The Gauteng Provincial Government is Committed to Making Nasi iSpani a Success

    According to Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS), unemployment in South Africa fell by 0.3% from 32,9% to 32,6% between the first and second quarters of 2023. Premier Lesufi is proud that the Gauteng Provincial Government is playing a part in such statistics.

    The province intends to start appointing successful candidates (outside the top 15) between the 25th of August and the 25th of September. They will be issuing appointment letters in an open and transparent manner.
