As the tourism industry continues to grow in South Africa, sustainability is becoming increasingly important. With the need for responsible energy use and eco-friendly practices, the Green Tourism Incentives Programme (GTIP) offers a way for tourism establishments to reduce their environmental footprint while contributing to a more sustainable future. If you are a privately owned tourism enterprise looking to adopt energy-efficient systems and reduce water consumption, the GTIP is the perfect opportunity for you.

    What Is Green Tourism?

Green tourism refers to a form of tourism that focuses on environmental sustainability and minimal impact on the planet. It encourages responsible practices by reducing the ecological footprint of tourism businesses. This includes initiatives such as using renewable energy sources, managing water resources efficiently, reducing waste, and protecting local ecosystems. In a country like South Africa, where tourism is a vital sector, green tourism plays a critical role in preserving the environment while providing economic benefits.

What Is the Green Tourism Incentives Programme (GTIP)?

Launched by the Department of Tourism in 2017, the Green Tourism Incentives Programme (GTIP) was created to assist tourism businesses in adopting sustainable practices. The program is aimed at reducing energy and water usage in tourism establishments by offering grant funding for energy-efficient and renewable energy systems. In 2020, the program was reviewed and improved to provide additional benefits, including support for sustainable management of water resources.

Funding: How Much Can You Get?

GTIP provides grant funding of up to R1 million to eligible tourism enterprises for the installation of energy and water efficiency solutions. This funding covers up to 90% of the total cost, with the remaining amount being covered by the applicant. The grant can be used for installing new systems, conducting resource efficiency audits, and improving overall energy and water management practices.

The funding is available to small and micro enterprises that meet certain eligibility criteria, including:

    • Being star-graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) for accommodation and conference venues.
    • Demonstrating economic viability in the application.
    • Showing B-BBEE compliance, with higher scores for businesses at Level 1.

    How to Apply for Funding

The application process for GTIP funding involves two phases:

    1. Phase 1: Conducting a resource efficiency audit to identify potential energy and water-saving solutions.
    2. Phase 2: Applying for the grant to implement these solutions.

To apply, businesses must submit an application form along with supporting documents, including:

    • A valid star-grading certificate (if applicable).
    • Financial statements from the last two years.
    • Resource efficiency audit report.
    • B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit.

Once the application is received, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which manages the GTIP, will assess the proposal and determine the appropriate level of funding.
